Since 1946 when it was founded until the advent of martial law in 1972, the Liberal Party (LP) was one of the Philippines’ two major parties, holding power for much of the crucial post-WW II economic reconstruction.
The party, particularly its stalwart in the senate, were crucial in the abrogation in 1991 of the RP-US Military Bases agreement that marked the closure of the biggest military installations outside the US thus ending more than four centuries of foreign military presence in the country.
The Party is also committed to fair and adequate wages and conditions for workers, and to the right to collective bargaining.

The Liberal Party today belied the claim of Senate President Manuel Villar that it allegedly refused to share election returns with its Genuine Opposition (GO) coalition partners after the LP was designated as the dominant minority by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) during the May 2007 polls.
Genuine Opposition and Liberal Party Senatorial Candidate Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III today reiterated his appeal to the Commission on Elections to rule at the earliest possible time on his request for a clarification on the use of the Aquino surname and the petition to disqualify Theodore Aquino.

TRAGIC ironies mocked the Liberal Party when it celebrated on Jan. 19 the 60th anniversary of its founding in the Great Schism of the Nacionalista Party that ended the NP’s monopoly of power since the Commonwealth days of President Manuel L. Quezon (1935-42).
The party increased its seats in the House of Representatives to 29 in the 2004 elections, from 20 in the 12th Congress, making it the net gainer compared with other parties.
The party’s factional imbroglio can only stifle its promise as a party of reform and its development into a key political player in the shifting alliances of the 13th Congress in the midst of the crisis of the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
