Bangladesh's development partners rounded off a meeting at the Watergate Hotel in Washington on February 25, 2005, with an expression of concern regarding deteriorating governance, and deciding to keep a close watch on how the Government tackles the rise of fundamentalist militancy and improves the overall scenario of governance.
The Islamist parties in the ruling coalition Government, known to be the force behind the rise of the militant outfits, were found to be opposing the anti-militancy operations launched by the Government.

 Bangladesh ruling party accused of ethnic cleaning
The Bangladesh government headed by Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was accused of ethnic cleansing and encouraging the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.
At a conference at the New Yorker Hotel, a coalition of Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian groups blamed her Bangladesh Nationalist Party for its role in the "alarming rise" of militant Islam in Bangladesh, coinciding with a spurt in the killings, torture and persecution of religious minorities, including women.
Chowdhury, who expressed his firm conviction that Hindus and other minorities are very much part and parcel of Bangladesh and that they have every right to fight for their survival, said those who are ruling Bangladesh now are serving the interests of Pakistan and not of Bangladesh.

At the 8th rokon (party worker) conference of the Jamaat-e-Islami, some frontline leaders from both parties voiced in unison that the BNP and the Jamaat belonged to the same family.
It sounds bizarre that a party claiming to be nationalist finds no difficulty to forge fraternity with another party that has blood of the martyred and wounded freedom fighters during the country’s 1971 liberation war and intellectuals on its hands.
The fact that Bangladesh is yet to see the face of democracy goes to negate the opinion of those who claimed to have established democracy.

Interest in the ongoing dialogue even among the "letter-head" parties seems to be waning, which is evident from the fact that only one third of the invited parties attended yesterday’s meeting.
The Jatiya Party (Ershad), which attended yesterday’s meeting was resentful of the fact that they had been invited along with minor parties although JP was one of the mainstream political parties of the country.
The little known "letter head" only parties which were present at yesterday’s meeting also appeared to be nonchalant and their contribution was of little interest to the overall election process.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) -- Bangladesh's government delayed giving up power Saturday because the head of the caretaker government that is supposed to lead the country through a general election is ill, an official said.
Channel-i TV station reported that angry opposition activists attacked and torched dozens of offices of Zia's party in the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere in the country after her speech Friday.
It said another leader of Jamaat-e-Islami party, an ally of Zia, was killed in clashes with opposition activists in northern Gazipur district.
