The Liberal Party was founded in 1944 as an alternative to the American Labor Party, which had been formed earlier as a vehicle for leftists uncomfortable with the Democratic Party to support Franklin Roosevelt.
Another hurdle to the efforts to reestablish the Liberal Party is the formation in mid-1998 of the Working Families Party, a party that enjoys, as the American Labor and Liberal parties did in their prime, strong union support.
The symbol of the New York Liberal Party is the Liberty Bell.

Parties that previously had ballot access -- the Liberals, Greens and Right to Lifers -- are now too weak to overcome the state's arcane ballot access laws and the major-party lawyers to even get a whiff of being on the ballot here in Suffolk.
My announcement is this: A new state party is forming affiliated with the national American Reform Party, and it will run independent and reform-minded candidates in Suffolk County (and hopefully elsewhere) in 2005 and statewide candidates in 2006, hoping to get the minimum number of votes needed to attain official ballot status.
New York State is one of the worst in the country in this regard.

Under the New York constitution, any party that gets 50,000 votes for governor becomes a Major Party, entitled to a slot on the ballot for each office in every election until the next gubernatorial vote.
What party leader Ray Harding does next with the skeleton of his organization is hard to say; some have suggested a think-tank.

The Liberal Party is the oldest continually operating political party in the U.S., having been founded as an anti-Communist alternative to the American Labor Party.
Some of the issues that the Liberal Party lead the way in was the establishment of Social Security, the Civil Rights laws of the '60's, the drive to legalize abortions, to outlaw the death penalty, environmental conservation, and full human rights, including marriage rights, for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community.
