Currently sponsored by the Libertarian Futurist Society (founded in 1982), this award was established in 1979 by L. Neil Smith to honor those works of fiction past and present that best promote freedom.
While many people (such as Vernor Vinge) might cite a nonfiction book as a primary influence (and, indeed, I have been told by some individuals that fiction is "a waste of time"), most readers respond more strongly to fiction than to an essay, research report, or academic tome.
Examine the shelves of science fiction (or other) novels for sale in any major bookstore and you will be struck by the difficulty in plucking the few freedom-friendly works from the indifferent multitudes.

Note here that Gilson uses "Libertarian" with a capital, referring to a party member, not someone who is necessarily a libertarian, the political philosophy, as in "personal application of Libertarianism", whatever that may be according to Gilson.
The libertarian (not libertarian party) solution to contractual unions is that government should not regulate them, but optionally may be utilized as a trusted third party to adjudicate contract enforcement.
Indeed, the Libertarian Party now seems to have embraced poor ethics: The Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Florida, Lisa Bullion, did not have proper written notice given to state party members about the October convention, with the result being there were about one half as many voting members there compared to the previous year.

John Varley's The Golden Globe has been selected as the winner of the Prometheus Award for the best libertarian science fiction novel of the year by the Libertarian Futurist Society (LFS).
Announced on August 27 at the North American Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, California, the award honors "outstanding science fiction/fantasy [books] that explore the possibilities of a free future, champion human rights, and dramatize the perennial conflict between individuals and coercive governments," said Michael Grossberg of the LFS.
At the same ceremony, the late H. Beam Piper won the Prometheus Hall of Fame award for A Planet for Texans (1958), co-written with John McGuire.

Let me state that I do not expect a paleo-conservative like Pat Buchannan to actually agree with libertarian views, but what I do expect is that, if he is going to comment on them, that he actually takes the time to figure out what libertarian views actually are before opening his noise making apparatus.
So in essence Pat Buchannan's thesis of genius is that "libertarianism leads to statism because non-libertarians have imposed welfare policies that libertarians regard as both immoral and economically unsound".

Grossberg is founder and a past board president of the Libertarian Futurist Society, which sponsors the Prometheus Awards for outstanding libertarian science fiction.
He discovered he was a Libertarian after reading "The Probability Broach" by L. Neil Smith, followed by "A New Dawn for America" by Roger Lea MacBride and "For a New Liberty" by Murray Rothbard.

That might not sound very libertarian but the way I see it, acts of violence are intolerable and can be reasonably met with acts of violence.
I actually look to civil society in the United States, for all its many and variegated flaws, as the Anglosphere's beacon of hope and regard it as almost certain to overcome the contrary tides of repressive statist stasis (well, almost certain).
Selbourne has a valid point in bemoaning the neglect of civil society (Edmund Burke's 'little platoons'), but like most statists misses the obvious point that it has been the growth of the state, such as the monopoly education system, that has wreaked so much havoc.

As soon as some begin to amass sufficient wealth, human nature being what it is, they will use it to influence the lawmaking processes of whatever society they live in to advantage themselves and disadvantage their competitors.
But then I've probably always been more of a socialist in favoring a society that collectively takes care of its sick, elderly, needy, educates its children, and so forth, much in the way an extended family accepts its obligations.

However, Heinlein is well known to us, having won our Prometheus Hall of Fame award more times than any other author, and having been aware of the Libertarian Futurist Society and giving his blessings to us in the early 1980s, before his death.
Our 10-person judging committee, which is just getting started after some new judges were approved by the Libertarian Futurist Society's board of directors, narrows down the nominees each year to five finalists, which will be announced in March.
