The stadium was enlarged and renovated in the mid-1980s.
The Liberty Bowl is more than adequate as a venue for the University of Memphis Tigers, who, although averaging about 40,000 per game in 2003-2005, historically have not been much of a gate draw unless competing against another area school such as Tennessee, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State.
And the Liberty Bowl game itself, while a better audience draw in recent years since it became the destination for the regular-season champion of Conference USA, still is almost never a sellout.

The Liberty Bowl is an annual college football game played in December of each year since 1959.
Initially, the game, the only cold-weather bowl game of its time, was plagued by poor attendance (the 1963 game drew only 8,309 spectators), so the 1964 game was the first bowl game ever played indoors in Atlantic City, New Jersey at Convention Hall on a shortened field before 6,059 fans.
The Liberty Bowl was sponsored by AXA Financial and was known as the AXA Liberty Bowl from 1997 to 2003.
