It is amazing that Libranet has survived for as long as it has given that there are many Debian-based distributions that have fallen by the wayside only to be remembered as roadkill on the Linux distribution highway.
Libranet 2.0 is based primarily on the testing branch of Debian with a few software updates from unstable thrown in for good measure.
Libranet is a distribution that is worth your attention, it is also one to watch.

NeoLink Computers - Libranet 2.8.1 Linux Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Libranet is a 2 disc distro and comes with a huge amount of software available to you right at the beginning of the install.
Libranet offers a nice option to automatically partition (great for beginners who are not dual booting), an option to use existing partitions, and then manually partition.
Libranet uses GRUB as their boot loader; I'm not very familiar with GRUB, but I had no problem whatsoever setting it up as Libranet does it for you.

Something Happened: Libranet restructuring - The Weblog of Tal Danzig
Libranet has been a wonderful learning experience for me, and would very much like to continue the legacy that is not just my father's work, but very much mine as well.
Libranet was not just "another distro" as those who used it and were involved in its community know.
Libranet's compatiblity with the Debian repositories reflects this philosophy.

Libranet 2.7 Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Libranet defaults to iceWM which is a Windows clone of exceptional power and extensive configurability.
Libranet extends this by including a couple of popular front-ends for APT that allow a user to point and click their way through the software management process.
Because Libranet offers a healthy dose of support via email, the web, and a fantastic and able user community (flaming is not tolerated) the risk involved in trying Libranet is quite small.

A big kudos to the libranet team is recorded here for their smart stringing together relevant applications to configure all the stuff on platypus box to work in the shortest amount of time and with the least hair pulling.
Here the platypus suggests that libranet comes out with their own packages in their repositories to counter the slowness in the debian packages (opening up the box to unstable is not really an acceptable compromise as it would throw the whole box into the land of unstableness.
He found the libranet distribution to be really worth it's salt, while not without it's tiny little warts here and there (all distributions have their short comings) but they do little to take away the shine and gleam from a distribution this good he thinks.

Libranet: Love at First Byte | TUX
The reason I started using Libranet is plain: I used to use Icepack Linux (anybody remember that?), a VERY nice (for its time) rpm based distro.
The problem with upgrading Libranet is that it now produces anomalies unless you make it virtually a non-Libranet system by changing your config.sys file to such an extent it no longer resembles the Libranet package.
Libranet, and its' associated utilities, offered me more granular control over the installation and setup (especially on my never-to-be-sufficiently-damned nx9010 laptop !!), without "hiding" anything from me, which some package handlers and installers tend to do under the guise of "making it easier for the user".
