Book stacks quickly evolved into a fairly standard form in which the cast iron and steel frameworks supporting the bookshelves also supported the floors, which often were built of translucent blocks to permit the passage of light (but were not transparent, for reasons of modesty).
Research libraries are most often academic libraries or national libraries, but many large special libraries have research libraries within their special field and a very few of the largest public libraries also serve as research libraries.

The Arts Library has open stacks, which means you can walk right to the shelves yourself (again, stacks are on five levels, down the hall to the left of the Circulation Desk--the main floor is stacks level 3) and take the book or journal volume to the Circulation Desk to be checked out.
The Arts Library has a special collections department that is located on the 2nd floor of YRL and is open from 10 to 5 p.m.
An additional workstation is on the 5th stack level, and the workstation hooked up to the scanner by the Reference Desk can also be used for research while not in use for scanning or CD burning.

Our business was original movie posters and we used metal frame shelving...when we put it up, one of our employees figured out to make braces across the top of each aisle so that the shelves couldnt fall over....again.
I worked there a few decades back and was just last night regaling a former grade school classmate with my take on why the U of I Library was one of the world's greatest libraries (he was under the mistaken impression that U of Texas had a better library).
I'll try that with my local library if all the shelves are not bolted to the floor.
