Liburnia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liburnia (recent Croatian Kvarner, Italian Quarnero) in ancient geography was the land of the Liburnians, a region along the northeastern Adriatic coast in Europe, actual Croatia, whose borders shifted according to the extent of Liburnian dominance at a given time between 11th and 1st century BC.
Liburnia was south of the Istrian peninsula along the Adriatic coast, though Liburnian dominance may have spread into eastern portions of Istria at times.
A medieval Liburnia was also the western coastal county within the early Croatian state of 9th century, and thus the first Croatian rulers had the official title dux Croatiae et Liburniae.

The Heroic Age: Lucius Artorius Castus
There is precisely one military action known to have been lead by a dux in the late second century, and that is a military expedition to Armorica in 185, which is documented by Herodian (10.1-7; Whittaker 1969:61-67).
Given the known date for the Armorica campaign and the fact that the Artorii were of the equestrian class, it becomes possible to reconstruct the life of this obscure individual in rather surprising detail.
At this time, Liburnia was a division of Dalmatia, and the governor of Dalmatia was Dio's father, Marcus Cassius Apronianus (185 C.E.; Dio 49.36.4, Cary 1917:415).

 ifoam'96 - Book of Abstracts
An example of the new positive approach towards development of ecotourism and organic agriculture in Croatia is County Primorsko-Goranska, north-western part of the ancient province of Liburnia - unique but diverse region which naturally, culturally and historically represents connective tissue of the Croatian State.
Taking into account its natural, cultural and historical heritage since Liburnian times, development of ecotourism, tightly connected with the development of organic agriculture, came across as one of the most appropriate economic activities.
Modern Liburnia can produce a whole range of organic products (olive oil, wines, temperate and mediterranean fruits, vegetables, herbs & spices, mushrooms, honey, dairy products, meat & preserves, game-meat, sea & freshwater fish, etc) and sell them through its ecotourism.

The Heroic Age: Lucius Artorius Castus, N/B
In this case, Castus would have received the governorship of Liburnia from Commodus as his reward.
No military upheaval is reported, though it is possible that something of that nature was responsible for the governor's death--which might explain Castus's posting to Liburnia at roughly the same time as Dio's father became governor of the province.
Xiphilinus, however, would not have considered Castus important to matters in Byzantium and would, therefore, have dropped his name from the summary of the incident.

Liburnians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
: Libournoi) were the ancient inhabitants of Liburnia, a coastal region at northeastern Adriatic between the river Arsia (now Raša) in Istria and the river Titius (now the Krka) what is now in Croatia.
The recent multi-disciplinary analyses (Yoshamya 2005) confirmed Liburnians do not have been Illyrians.
Other settlements were found along the coast northwards towards eastern Istria, an area which was more firmly part of Liburnia after the fifth century BC.
