Lichenology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lichenology is the branch of botany that studies the lichens, symbiotic organisms made up by the association of a microscopical alga with a filamentous fungus.
The taxonomy of lichens was first intensively investigated by the Swedish botanist Erik Acharius (1757-1819), who is therefore sometimes named the "father of lichenology".
Some of his more important works on the subject, which marked the beginning of lichenology as a discipline, are:

His four major books are the foundation-stones of lichenology, as is his rich herbarium now in Helsinki (with duplicates at Uppsala University and in the Natural History Museum in London).
He was buried with great ceremonial at Vadstena, but his grave there is unmarked today, probably as a result of subsequent reorganisatinn of the churchyard.
In connection with a symposium held by the International Association for Lichenology at Båstad in 1993 a memorial of Acharius was installed on the house where he lived in Vadstena by Prof.

The title has been taken up by subsequent IAL congresses, but with books remaining out of reach financially to many individual researchers, the wisdom of the separate publication of sets of specialized papers has to be questioned in future.

The current situation was perceived as a re-occurrence of a repeated trend in North American lichenology in which professional lichenology died out and the next generation was forced to learn field lichenology from scratch.
The solution seemed to be a well trained amateur group which would carry on the knowledge of systematic lichenology until the next professional group of lichenologists would emerge.
