Liebfraumilch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Valckenberg wine company sells their wine produced in the original vineyard, "Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück," under the name "MADONNA Liebfraumilch," although ironically it is not legally a Liebfraumilch, but rather a QmP.
The generic label Liebfraumilch is used to market low quality vintages from anywhere in the Rheinhessen/Nahe area.
While the term is associated with low quality wine, Liebfraumilch is required by the German Wine Law to be one step above the lowest category, Tafelwein (table wine).

Liebfraumilch, the drink that singlehandedly destroyed the reputation of the German wine industry, is to be added to a list of traditional European delicacies for which Brussels is seeking global brand protection at next month's world trade talks in Cancun.
Accusing foreign producers of ripping off the names of some of Europe's most famous foods and wines, the European commission said it was considering seeking protection for a further 600 items on a special register of geographically defined products it wants the World Trade Organisation to recognise.
The late addition of Liebfraumilch to the list of products Europe claims are in danger of being copied abroad raised eyebrows last night in the drinks industry.

While British wine buyers still seem to have a hangover from the sugary mass market wines which became popular in the Seventies and Eighties, wine drinkers in the United States are running out of superlatives for the new breed of German wine.
The reason is really due to the down-market image created by Liebfraumilch, originally a good wine produced by the classic Riesling grape from only one vineyard in the Rheinhessen.
Liebfraumilch was very successful in the late Seventies and early Eighties.

 Valckenberg
At that time the name of Liebfraumilch was used by a lot of producers up and down the Rhine River, it became synonymous for Rhine wines.
Since the Valckenberg families 30 acres would not have been sufficient to produce enough Liebfraumilch to supply the world market, the decision was made for Liebfraumilch to become a regional wine.
To show a difference between the regional type of Liebfraumilch made by any other producer and the one made by the original producer, Valckenberg has started to use the “MADONNA Liebfraumilch” which is today Germany’s oldest trade mark for wine.
