Liebig condenser - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The Liebig condenser is a piece of laboratory equipment where a coiled glass pipe goes through a water jacket (a glass cylinder through which water constantly flows).
The Liebig condenser is much more efficient than a simple retort due to its use of liquid cooling.
This makes Liebig condensers very useful for fractional distillation.Though named after the German chemist Justus Baron von Liebig, he cannot be given credit for having invented it because it was already in use for some time before him.

Liebig was born in Darmstadt into a middle class family of mixed German and Jewish descent.
Liebig did not receive the doctorate until well after he had left Erlangen, and the circumstances are clouded by a possible scandal Munday (1990).
The vapor condensation device he popularized for his research is still known as a Liebig condenser, although it was in common use long before Liebig's research began.

Condenser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chemistry, a condenser is the apparatus in which some type of condensation occurs.
For example, a chemist may use a Liebig condenser for vapor-to-liquid condensation, which is a heat transfer type of condenser as described below.
Condenser (steam turbine) is an example of such a heat-exchange system; it is a shell and tube heat exchanger installed at the outlet of every steam turbine in Thermal power stations.

 Justus von Liebig Summary
Liebig was a student in chemistry at both Bonn and Erlangen and received his doctoral degree from the latter university in 1822.
Liebig is probably best known to chemistry students as the inventor of the Liebig condenser, a distillation apparatus found in most every chemical laboratory but he also played a part in numerous key discoveries.
Liebig wisely argued against fertilizing with only nitrogen, as this would ultimately result in depletion of other minerals from the soil, and correctly theorized that the least abundant mineral in a given expanse of soil will limit plant growth no matter how plentiful other minerals were.

Liebig condenser The Liebig condenser is a piece of laboratory equipment where a straight glass pipe goes through a water jacket (a glass cylinder through which water constantly flows).
Though named after the German chemist Justus Baron von Liebig, he cannot be given credit for having invented it because it was already in use for some time before him.
Liebig himself incorrectly attributed the design to the German pharmacist Johann Göttling who had made improvements to the Weigel design in 1794.

The solution to this problem is to use a water-cooled condenser, since water has a much greater capacity for removing heat than the air that was used to cool the ancient vessels.
The familiar water-cooled condenser is traditionally referred to as a "Liebig condenser".

Condenser - Homedistiller   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A condenser is an apparatus that cools vapor or steam thus converting it to its liquid form.
During distillation of alcohol, alcohol vaporizes at a lower temperature than water, this vapor travels to the condenser and then the condenser helps chang the vapor to liquid alcohol.
Design-wise, it is the reverse of the so-called "shotgun" condenser in that the coolant flows through the tubes and the vapour passes over the tubes at rightangles, allowing much larger volumes of vapour to be condensed for no increase in condenser size.

 Separating Mixtures
The liebig condenser is sure to condense liquid as the word 'condenser' comes from the root 'condense'.
The liebig condenser is obviously used to condense the liquid from evaporating into gaseous state as some liquid has very low boiling temperature which can be evaporated into gaseous state quickly.
Therefore, if the rest of the part of the liebig condenser is not cooled, the liquid may evaporate into gas when it is been condensed out due to the hot temperature.

The function of the condenser is to convert the vapor formed in our boiling flask back into a liquid.
This is done by lowering the temperature of the vapor by using a coolant (usually water) and the efficiency is directly proportional to the area exposed to the coolant.
