The Matsu Islands (馬祖列島; or less frequently, 馬祖群島 Pinyin: Mǎzǔ) are a minor archipelago of 19 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait administered as Lienchiang County (連江 Pinyin: Liánjiāng), Fujian Province of the Republic of China (ROC, based on Taiwan).
After the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan in 1949, the ROC retained the part of Lienchiang County offshore (and the entire Kinmen County as well).
The common romanization used in the ROC is Wade-Giles (Lienchiang) while the PRC uses pinyin (Lianjiang).

The People First Party (PFP)-controlled Lienchiang County Government has decided to temporarily call off a plan to survey its residents on whether the county's name should be changed to Matsu, a county official said yesterday.
As there is a Lienchiang County in both China and Taiwan, the county government was considering changing the name of the Taiwan county to avoid shipments and mail being misdirected.
Taiwan's Lienchiang County is administratively under the Republic of China's Fukien Province.

Quemoy County is nominally controlled by Quanzhou prefecture-level city, but it is administered in its entirety by the Republic of China on Taiwan.

Kuomintang legislator for Matsu, Tsao Erh-chung, signed a civil exchange accord between Matsu and Mawei on behalf of Lienchiang County, the official name for the Matsu archipelago, on January 28.
Liu Li-chun, Lienchiang County chief magistrate, said the accord aimed to foster limited trade and transport links with the mainland - dubbed the "mini links" - which have been cold shouldered by Beijing.

Matsu, March 24 (CNA) Mainland Chinese iron-hulled fishing vessels have been reported to be massing in the waters off Tungyin, one of the Republic of China-controlled outlying Matsu Islands, causing concern among island residents.
Liu Li-chun, magistrate of Lienchiang County which includes the Matsu islands, went to Tungyin on Friday to get a first-hand understanding of the situation.
Liu said the number of iron-hulled vessels, each of which was estimated at 100 metric tons, had reached 240 as of 11:30 a.m.

Lienchiang is the name of the county on the offshore island of Matsu, where only a couple of people live.
Chiang considered Kinmen and Matsu strategically vital and never relinquished his control of the two island groups, both only a couple of miles off the Chinese coast.
