It is the administrative center of the Lienz district (Bezirk) in East Tyrol.
Lienz is located at 46°49′47″N, 12°46′11″E, on the rivers Isel and Drava, and has a population of 12,079 (2001).
Lienz is located at a road junction between the federal Felbertauern road (B108), a road to the Pustertal valley (B100) and South Tyrol, and a road to the Drautal valley and Carinthia.
