Major General Abdul Rahim Khan was reputed to have been posted to East Pakistan in response to a special request by Lieutenant General Niazi and was said to be ‘General Niazi’s brains’.
In the planning of the defence of East Pakistan, Lieutenant General A. Niazi did not understand the strategic and tactical use of the commandos, when the defence of East Pakistan was being planned I suggested a raid on Calcutta, the general refused to listen and remarked that I wanted to become a brigadier.
With Lieutenant General Tikka as the commander Eastern Command in nominal command, Major General Mitha held the actual command of the initial actions of the military actions to re-establish the writ of the Pakistan Government.

 Governor 's Profile
Governor Punjab Lieutenant general Muhammad Safdar (retired) was commissioned in a battalion of the Punjab Regiment of Pakistan Army in 1954.
Soon after his retirement, Lieutenant General Muhammad Safdar was appointed as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Morocco, an appointment that he held from 1990 to 1992.
The ceremony was held at the fully packed Darbar Hall and attended, among others, by Provincial Ministers, Dewan Yusuf Farooqui and Anita Ghulam Ali, judges of the High Court of Sindh, representatives of the Armed Forces, Secretaries of all the Sindh Government departments besides Commissioner Karachi, Inspector General Police Sindh and other senior officers.

One of the most glorious moments for independent India was on December 16, 1971 at 16.51 hours, when Lieutenant General A A K Niazi, General Officer in Commanding-in-Chief, East Pakistan, and his 91,000 strong Pakistan Army corps surrendered to Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora, GOC-in-C Eastern Command of the Indian Army.
General Aurora remembered with nostalgia his younger days when he was commissioned on January 1, 1939 into 5 battalion of 2 Punjab Regiment.
Recounting the major contributory factors in this unprecedented victory, the general attributed the success to the superior combat power of the Indian troops, their initiative and the fact that time was on his side.

Lieutenant General Abdullah Niazi (89), the Pakistani army officer who surrendered to India in the 1971 India-Pakistan war, died of a heart attack in Lahore.
General Aurora, who created history by defeating the Pakistan army in Bangladesh, does not think too much of the war itself.
Niazi, born in 1915, was commissioned into the Indian army in 1942 and later opted to join the Pakistan army, becoming one of its most decorated officers.

 Madras Regiment
The 28 Battalion of the Madras Regiment was raised in 1942 by Lieutenant Colonel NC Jackson of the 3/15 Punjab Regiment (now in Pakistan) as the 3rd Coastal Defence Battalion at Yeravada in Pune and saw overseas service at Bahrain and Kuramshahr before disbandment in 1946 during the general demobilisation of the Royal Indian Army.
The battalion was raised in 1704 at Padmanabhapuram in Kalkulam taluk of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu.
The Maratha Light Infantry (MLI) RR battalion was raised at Belgaum, the Madras Regiment at Tiruchi, the Assam Regiment RR battalion at Shillong, the Punjab RR at Ramgarh, Grenadiers at Jabalpur and the Dogra Regiment RR battalion at Faizabad.

Emerging from the 30-minute meeting in Rawalpindi, Kalmadi, when asked how optimistic he was about the resumption of the cricket ties, said that his discussions with Zia should be seen in the light of India's desire to improve sporting ties with Pakistan.

KARACHI - The recent country-wide sectarian violence in Pakistan has revived conflict between officials of the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the interior ministry, headed by a retired lieutenant-general, Moinuddin Haider, over measures to crack down on militant groups, irrespective of their sectarian beliefs.
The former ruling parties, the Pakistan People's Party and the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), have tried to stage rallies, but the administration has come down hard on them, even jailing hundreds of their members.
