Lieutenant Nately is a fictional character in the 1961 World War II novel Catch-22, written by Joseph Heller.
His family originally enlisted him to serve in the Air Corps, believing the war would be over by the time he finished his training and that he would mingle with "gentlemen".
Art Garfunkel portrayed Nately in the 1970 film adaptation of the novel directed by Mike Nichols.

Nately begins to have wild fantasies of moving his whore and her sister back to America and bringing the sister up like his own child, but when his whore hears that he no longer wants her to go out hustling, she becomes furious and an argument ensues.
But she still misses Nately when he leaves, and she is furious with Yossarian when he punches Nately in the face and breaks his nose.
Nately is in the hospital the next morning, and Yossarian feels terribly guilty for having broken his nose.

Aarfy laughs as he recalls to Yossarian and Nately how he used to make high-school girls sleep with him by threatening to tell their parents they were sleeping with them (251).
Later, he rapes and kills a girl in Rome so that she will not “go around saying bad things about us.” Ironically, Yossarian is the one who is arrested a few minutes later for being in Rome without a pass, proving the corruption in his world which keeps him bound to samsara (428-429).
To avenge Lieutenant Scheisskopf’s hatred of him and all the other cadets, he sleeps with Scheisskopf’s wife “to revenge himself upon Lieutenant Scheisskopf for the way Lieutenant Scheisskopf was revenging himself upon Clevinger” (Heller 79).

Since he was the only one who was agreeable to flying more missions, as soon as he flew his 71st, he died.

Nately is incensed by the old man's lack of loyalty, but cannot refute the man's argument that he will outlast whoever is in power because of the way he changes loyalty so easily.
One of the prostitutes they employ becomes Nately's unofficial girlfriend (she is referred to only as "Nately's Whore").
Despite Nately's repeated advances, she spurns him cruelly, and, when Nately is killed, blames Yossarian for his death; she manifests a towering rage and tries to kill Yossarian several times during the remainder of the narrative.
