Food Product Design: Design Elements -- Breakfast Cereal, Kid-Style
Breakfast cereals are indeed one of the most important sources of vitamins and other nutrients for children, and they constitute an important category for food designers and manufacturers as well.
Fortified breakfast cereal may not have all of the nutritional benefits of five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables, but it contributes to increased nutrients in a lot of children's diets.
Another approach to lengthening cereal bowl life is establishing a barrier around the cereal, keeping the milk from reaching the inner core of the dried cereal.

Finding the right breakfast cereal is a challenge for consumers who want to lose or maintain their weight, said Madelyn Fernstrom, director of the UPMC Weight Management Center, who has been guiding Your Health through the supermarket aisles monthly to help consumers make wise choices.
Fernstrom also looks for the "reasonable" choices, and figures that a cereal with as much as 12 grams of sugar is acceptable -- though the less, the better, of course -- as long as there are high amounts of fiber and protein.
The fiber cereal adds just 25 calories, but 7 grams of fiber -- about a third of a day's recommended fiber allotment -- to the 110- to 120-calorie bowl of regular cereal, a perfectly acceptable breakfast, she said.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Horrors (Death of Little Mikey)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Little Mikey of LIFE cereal fame died from the explosive effects of mixing Pop Rocks candy with soda pop.
Urban legends require victims who are known yet anonymous — the ubiquitous friends of a friend — to lend them a touch of credible realism without allowing for the easy verification of their details.
Little Mikey was a kid known to all other children by virtue of his famous television commercial, yet he was still relatively anonymous — few people (adults included) knew his real name, and his non-appearance in any public role subsequent to his well known LIFE commercial could therefore plausibly be attributed to his untimely demise.
