Wallace v. Metropolitan Life Ins. Co., 2004 DSD 17
In Woo, Hartford Life's failure to obtain an independent medical review of the plaintiff's benefits claim was found to be a "serious procedural irregularity" and a "serious breach" of the fiduciary duties to use proper judgment and thoroughly investigate a claim.
The Woo court noted some extenuating circumstances that clearly necessitated an independent medical review: the plaintiff was afflicted with an uncommon disease that, although it had not been properly diagnosed at the time she was eligible for benefits, was subsequently diagnosed by two treating physicians.
Under such circumstances, the Woo court held that Hartford Life had a duty to obtain an independent medical evaluation and investigate the treating physicians' diagnoses rather than simply rely on its in-house review of her earlier physicians' treatment notes.

Given Radio 2's liking for the thorough approach to music documentary - six instalments are not uncommon - it seemed odd that "the most important man in popular music" (Stuart Maconie, circa 1992, in what he now concedes was a gross understatement) was treated to just the one.

Earthquake: Real Life or Disaster Movie?
Earthquakes, while admittedly uncommon in New York, are a real threat in several states, including California, Nevada, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, Arkansas, and Utah.
In fact, at least one made-for-television "disaster movie" was aired by each of the major television networks last year, including the CBS movie, Aftershock, about a fictional earthquake in New York City.
While the purpose of disaster movies is, of course, entertainment, they do serve an even greater purpose.

CONTEXT - This Week in Arts and Ideas from The Moscow Times
The libretto to "A Life for the Tsar" was mostly the work of one Baron Yegor von Rozen, a Prussian from the Baltic provinces who learned Russian only while serving in the military and whose often awkward use of the language pops up repeatedly throughout the opera.
With the premiere of his brilliant staging of Mikhail Glinka's "A Life for the Tsar" last Sunday at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater, three-time Golden Mask award winner Dmitry Chernyakov proved once again that the timeworn art of opera is as vital in Russia today as it ever was.
Glinka has often been called "the father of Russian music," and "A Life for the Tsar," staged at the Mariinsky to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth, is universally conceded to be the first really important Russian opera.

Up until about 30 years ago, it was believed that all life on Earth was dependent upon energy from the sun.

Paths to egalitarian gender attitudes differ
Because forerunner parents are uncommon, many sons do not have these experiences at home, and tend to hold more traditional gender attitudes, Myers and Booth say, but women do not rely on their early family life.
Among forerunners, or people who foreshadow the easing of traditional gender attitudes, men must grow up in a nontraditional household to become forerunners, but women develop forerunner attitudes through later life education and work experiences, researchers say.
"So the daughter of non-forerunner parents may still become a forerunner, but there is very little in the early home life that directly influences her to become a forerunner."
