European Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Union or the EU is an intergovernmental and supranational union of 25 European countries, known as member states.
Supporters of the European Union argue that the growth of the EU is a force for peace and democracy.
The European Communities are one of the three pillars of the European Union, being both the most important pillar and the only one to operate primarily through supranational institutions.

In 1991 the governments of the 12 member states signed the Treaty on European Union (commonly called the Maastricht Treaty), which was then ratified by the national legislatures of all the member countries.
Some supporters of European political unity, such as the French statesman Jean Monnet, further believed that if the nations of Europe were to resume a dominant role in world affairs, they had to speak with one voice and command resources comparable to those of the United States.

The draft European constitution proposed by the European constitutional convention and currently under discussion in the IGC marks the next stage in the development of the European Union.
For this reason, the very fact that the European Union is providing the means for the member states to work together to deal with things that they could not do alone is in itself a democratic advance.
In the case of the European Commission and the national governments, their influence on decision-taking might be exercised either by ministers or by civil servants.

Women in the EU: Family - Family life in the European Union
While the European birthrate has generally decreased as levels of female employment have increased, it is not possible to assume causality, i.e., that increased employment has led to a falling birthrate.
While life expectancy and the death rate may not seem immediately relevant to the theme of women and the family, the fact that women generally live longer than men has a social as well as demographic effect.
Life expectancy is an average which takes into account, for example, the high mortality among children of both sexes, but especially males, under one year of age.

Trade Union Action: Integrating Disabled Persons into Working Life - European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC): Policy ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The ETUC was born of the need for the trade union movement to come together to safeguard the interests of workers across Europe and join in a European project in a zone of peace, economic and social progress and solidarity.
Although the initial role of trade unions and social partners was purely consultative, to the Economic and Social Council for instance, the Single European Act of 1986, the Treaty of Maastricht of 1991 and the Treaty of Amsterdam of 1996 brought growing ETUC involvement in the European integration process.
Having defined the role of the European and national trade union movements and their policy regarding disabled persons, the ETUC then turned its attention to the strategy to be adopted to achieve its claims.

Spectrezine on Bolkestein Directive - 12th November 2004
This would be a fatal blow for the European Union which, regardless of declarations on the need for a common legislative framework for all its Member States, would, on the contrary, end up in practical terms with 25 different frameworks.
Its entry into force would be a fatal blow to the quality of life in the European Union because it would lead to the imposition of an economy based solely on the laws of the market, with the consequent cancellation of public assistance and social rights, which would be subject solely to profit.
The European Commission has still not produced a study on the real impact of the draft Directive on the working conditions of the interested parties and its repercussions on the economic conditions that would come into play, especially in Member States with more advanced welfare systems and frameworks of rights.

 KOINONIA - European values
Nat Gerrs at "Why Europe?" (http://www.ellopos.net/politics/eu_why-europe.html) writes that the values of the European Union are "stolen from their source" and because of this they "will be more and more corrupted in the course of time, they will become unrecognisable and then unthinkable, until Europe will collapse in the dust of hypocrisy, scheming and barbarity".
These are European divisions and aberrations against the natural order that the culture industry now replicates unnaturally, and more fully by presenting a false consciousness of self-satisfied superficiality and conformism to the world, by wilfully ignoring the prohibitions and customs of any cultural group or community.
Likewise the banality of a jargonised political language is perfectly observable in those countries like the United States of America or Australia where the official culture is one of total administration and maximum mobilisation within the confines of a strictly economical from of discourse that reflects the shallow veneer of their cultures.

With regards to this Resolution, it attests that "the objective of balanced participation of men and women in family and working life, as well as the balanced participation of men and women in the decision-making process" are two pre-conditions for equality between men and women.
It considers it the responsibility of society, Member States and the European Community to promote the need for reconciling family and working life as a right for men and women and as a means of personal fulfilment in public, social, family and private life.
