SAINT ALEXANDER NEVSKY (1220-1263), grand-duke of Vladimir, was the second son of the grand-duke Yarosla y.
At an early age he distinguished himself in constant warfare with the Germans, Swedes and Lithuanians, who tried to wrest Novgorod and Pskov from Russia while she was still suffering from the effects of the terrible Tatar invasion.
On the death of his father (1246) Alexander and his younger brother Andrew went on a two years' journey into Mongolia to obtain their yarluiki, or letters of investiture, from the Grand Khan, who then disposed of the fate of all the Russian princes.

 Life of St. Alexander Nevsky
His parents, real country nobility, were very devout, they contributed to the adornment of the cathedral and of a monastery established nearby on a hill and they were present at all the divine services celebrated in a small chapel which was connected with their residence by a wooden arcade.
Alexander was scarcely three years old when his father was elected prince of Novgorod and went to live two leagues away from this ever unruly city in order to preside over its fortunes.
Alexander, called on to reign and to fight, henceforth devoted his whole life to the service of the nation; bowing to the divine will he sacrificed himself for the common good.

Life of Alexander Nevsky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Life of Alexander Nevsky" (Житие Александра Невского in Russian, or Zhitiye Aleksandra Nevskogo), a Russian literary monument of the late 13th — early 14th centuries.
The work describes life and achievements of Alexander Nevsky, a Russian ruler and a military leader, who defended the northern borders of Rus against the Swedish invasion, defeated the Teutonic knights at the Lake Chud in 1242 and paid a few visits to Batu Khan to protect the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality from the Khazar raids.
"Life..." is filled with patriotic spirit and achieves a high degree of artistic expressiveness in its description of Alexander's heroic deeds and those of his warriors.

Alexander was taken to Novogrod,as a young child, where he witnessed firsthand the baneful effect of internal dissension as his father struggled with the proudly independent spirited boyars.
The remaining course of his life as Grand Prince of Russia was spent in securing its western borders against persistent German campaigns, in subduing the Novgorodians' defiant opposition to the Khan's poll tax and in diplomatically placating the Khan’s anger which flared intermittently in response to indiscretions committed by the lesser princes.
Although it was 200 years before Russia was free of Tatar control, Alexander’s skill and self-sacrificing devotion which he brought to the Herculean task set before him as ruler, and his commitment to the preservation of Orthodoxy at the core of a growing national consciousness, made him a hero of both historic and spiritual dimensions.

Alexander Nevsky, Sergei Eisenstein's landmark tale of Russia thwarting the German invasion of the 13th century, was wildly popular with home-grown audiences back in 1938, quite intentionally so, given the prevailing Nazi geopolitical advancement and destruction at the time.
Much of the filming is as clumsy as the characterization, with obvious painted backdrops, clumsy medieval-speak dialog, constant reversion to silent moviemaking techniques at their least compelling and a tendency to go for height in the image to such an extent that the action is often barely clinging to the bottom of the frame.

Nevsky is a finely textured patriotic war movie that is conventionally seen as an exultation of Communism and call to arms against the Germans.
Written in close collaboration with Eisenstein by Sergei Prokofiev, one of the 20th century’s most important composers, the music is so intimately entangled with the film that it is impossible to imagine one without the other.
The role of the 16th Tsar who united Russia is played in both films by Alexander Nevsky’s Nikolai Cherkassov, who gives a finely textured and commanding performance.

Imitation of the life of Christ then was the benchmark against which Saints were measured, and Imitation of the lives of Saints was the benchmark against which the general population measured itself.
In the 10th century, a Byzantine monk Simeon Metaphrastes was the first one to change the genre of lives of the saints into something different, giving it a moralizing and panegyrical character.
