	Gold Lifesaving Medal
		The Gold Lifesaving Medal is awarded by the Commandant of the Coast Guard to any person who rescues, or endeavors to rescue, any other person from drowning, shipwreck, or other peril of the water.
		In the center of a gold medal one and seven-sixteenths inches in diameter, three men are depicted in a boat in a heavy sea.

		That changed in 1977, when the NCOH authorized a medal to be struck as part of the award for heroism; in 1982, the name of the recognition was changed to the Heroism Award (which today does encompass minimum risk to self).

		Established on Hatteras Island in the winter of 1878-79, the Pea Island station was originally manned by an all-white crew which failed to keep a proper lookout when a British bark went aground a short distance from the station.
		Given an opportunity to prove themselves, the fl crew at Pea Island distinguished themselves with an exceptional esprit de corps that existed until closure of the station in 1947.
