 SPIN.com: A Lifetime of Rock
"Lifetime was the first band that was able to break out of the typical hardcore mold and add the elements of pop and pop-punk while still holding the integrity that the hardcore scene (of then) held onto so dearly.
I was 16 or 17 then and the feeling it gave me was that it's okay to embrace the idea that it's okay for music to change, and okay to pull influences from wherever the hell you damn like and not just obey the forefathers of hardcore or metal.
"Lifetime is one of those bands that set the mark that scores and scores of bands tried to follow and hopefully come close to.

 Red Skies -- Salem State College's E-Zine
Many of the songs are vintage Lifetime – passionately driving guitar parts, blazing vocals, lyrics that would put Dashboard Confessional to shame (from “Up”: just get up you make me laugh; and I can't count the times you've made me smile; so get up; you're beautiful but you're down).
Another high point is the 52 page booklet which includes an introduction full of witty stories and insights into life as a band, and ‘over 40 previously unreleased photos’, which is cool, but not really something punk rock fans are really thinking about.
Also included are the lyrics, which is a plus, because Lifetime is a band that is really enjoyable to sing along to.

That band was led by Williams's collaborator here, John McLaughlin, as blistering and savvy a guitarist as any jazz-rock saw.
Personally I like the second Tony Williams Lifetime band better no disrespect to John Mclaughlin but Alan Holdsworth is just that more on edge and the songs seemed to have more purpose and direction.
This recording as important as it may be in the birth/raising of fusion is very harsh and the grooves are too loose and heavier to the ear than metal (probably a bad comparison)but maybe that's the idear but I'm not as appreciative.
