From its former name, Drehu, Lifou is the most far flung island in the archipelago with a surface area of 1,150 sq km (larger than Martinique).

 Lifou 2000: A Major Scientific Survey
The scientific survey LIFOU 2000, organized and led jointly by the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) and the Instituit de recherche pour le développement (IRD), was conducted at Lifou (Loyalty Islands Province) in October and November 2000.
The samples collected from Lifou 2000, which include several hundred unknown species, signify a world first : the survey is the only study to have available an exhaustive quantified inventory of the species richness of a whole site.
The Lifou 2000 survey team is now planning a campaign of similar scope in South-East Asia, at the heart of the " Golden Triangle " of reef biodiversity, the " Holy Grail " of all marine zoologists.

Located on the shores of the Chateaubriand Bay, the village of Wé is the main administrative and commercial centre of Lifou.
In the north, Doking, the most spectacular site of Lifou where a tribe lives on the side of a 40 m high cliff overhanging extremely beautiful sea bed of coral with exceptionally clear water.
During their annual migrations (from August to September) it is along these cliffs that whales come to scratch off their back the many small shells that have accumulated on their skin.

To accompany Hideyuki Takasu's message on Peltodoris fellowsi from Japan, here are a couple of photos of it from Lifou, Loyalty Ids., east of New Caledonia.
I have not as yet had a chance to examine its anatomy, but externally it fits Kay & Young's original description well, except that they describe the rhinophore stalks and gill rachids to be red-brown whereas in the Lifou specimens they are translucent white.

In spite of this, I saw all the mainland and Lifou endemics.
I saw all the mainland and Lifou endemics.  My biggest miss was Blue-faced Parrot-Finch, which I got a glimpse of on Lifou.
The 2 birds I saw were slightly different than the book, having a fl head and breast joined with a fl collar that went to the wing, and a yellow nape that was broken by fl on the side of the neck - not a complete yellow collar as shown in the book.

 New Caledonia Trip Report
We concentrated on the protected forest patches at Rivière Bleue and Mount Koghi, where all the mainland endemics may with luck be encountered.
The vegetation on Lifou and the Isle of Pines was happily in much better shape, with dense forest areas fairly extensive on both, and well worth a look for the lovely scenery and superb beaches.
Scarce and shy on Lifou, I saw one nicely near Drehu village, and heard about 3 others singing deep in the dense forest.

The symposium was organized by Emmanuel Kasarhérou, director Tjibaou Cultural Centre with the support of the Loyalty Islands Province and the District Council of Lifou.
A special thanks to the Head Chief of Wetr (Nathalo), Officials of the Loyalty Islands Province, Mayor of Lifou, the Easo Museum, the Wetr Dance Company, the artists, performers and the many people who were our hosts on Lifou who worked so hard to make the symposium a great event.

I saw all the mainland and Lifou endemics.
Several heard at Mt Koghi on Sunday, at Col de Amieux on Friday, and one female/immature finally seen briefly on treetops on the Transversal road a bit west of Touho.
I saw one flyby on the Transversal, near the km 12 spot, and another on the Roche Perce road a few km from Bourail.
