  Elves
Elves is often used as a general term for fairies especially in the XIXth anglo-saxon litterature.
In modern descriptions, elves are either light or dark, the light elves having starlike eyes, faces brighter than the sun, and golden-colored hair; the dark elves are pitch fl and have sometimes fluorescent eyes, this quality being indicative of their dealing with fl magic.
During the course of time elves moved to other places in the world and in many tribes their spiritual shape was lost completely and elves changed to beings consisting of blood and flesh.

Elf - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
As such, elves appear similar to the animistic belief in spirits of nature and of the deceased, common to nearly all human religions; something that, on a side note, is true also for the Old Norse belief in fylgjur and vörðar ("follower" and "warden" spirits, respectively).
Small wingless elves of British folklore also appear distinct thus Santa's Elves (of whom it should be noted are referred to as Gnomes also, by many in the UK rather than Elves) are called "tomte" in Swedish or "nisse" in Norwegian.
Machine elves, a term first introduced by writer and psychedelic researcher Terrence McKenna, is used to describe the presumed other-worldly intelligent beings which subjects sometimes feel they encounter during psychedelic experiences (especially those induced by naturally-occurring tryptamines, such as DMT or psilocybin), as well as during shamanic and alien abduction experiences.

Concerned for the safety of the Elves in Middle-earth, which was at that time under the control of Melkor, the Valar left Valinor and made war against the Dark Lord: this was the Battle of the Powers, which saw Melkor taken as captive back to Valinor.
While the Two Trees still gave light to the realm of the Valar, three ages passed, and the Elves of Valinor became the wisest and noblest of all the Children of Ilúvatar.
Elves also have far clearer sight and perception than Men; they are naturally aware of many things that are hidden from the Younger Children, but these gifts are not without limit.

Elf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elves are often pictured as youthful-seeming men and women of great beauty living in forests and other natural places, underground, or in wells and springs.
Tolkien's Elves of Middle-earth are immortal in the sense that they are not vulnerable to disease or the effects of old age.
A hallmark of fantasy elves is also their long and pointed ears (a convention begun with a note of Tolkien's that the ears of elves were "leaf-shaped").

 THE ELVEN RACES
A pragmatic race, elves hardly ever have strong gender lines in their societies, and either men and women can be found in most social roles, thus the actual gender of their god is not really important to them.
Many purest amongst the elves wish to quell further degradation of their bloodlines and frown upon mixed marriages, but most admit such unions are inevitable and over time the elves will meld into the human race, hopefully the end product enjoying the best both races have to offer.
Some elves, however, live a more settled life, but their cities and villages are usually smaller and well integrated as part of the natural landscape rather than an affront to its innate beauty.

 Elf - Gurupedia
The elves (light elves) are often mentioned along with the Aesir, instead of the Vanir (a race of gods).
The names Vanir and Alfar (light elves) may have been either synonymous, since the expression "Aesir and Alfar" meant "all the gods", or designating a difference in status between the major fertility gods, the Vanir, and the minor, the elves.
Elves of Middle-earth (capitalized) are not deathless and can be killed by injury, but they are immortal insofar as they do not grow old and die of age like humans.
