Light bulb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The light bulb is one of the most significant inventions in the history of the human race, illuminating the darkness of the evening and bringing light indoors at all times in order focus on the task at hand.
Originally, artificial light was generated by an open flame – in a rustic torch burning in a wall bracket, a hand-held candle or lantern, and later with natural gas lighting.
The incandescent light bulb was the first type of modern electric light, introduced in the early 19th Century and still basically inefficient at converting electricity to light.

Incandescent light bulb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The incandescent light bulb or incandescent lamp is a source of artificial light that works by incandescence, in which an electric current passes through a thin filament, heating it and causing it to emit light.
The "bulb" is the glass enclosure around the filament that often contains a vacuum or is filled with a low-pressure noble gas to prevent the filament from burning out due to evaporation at the high temperature.
An incandescent light bulb (about 2.1% efficiency) is about one quarter as efficient as a fluorescent lamp (about 8.2% efficiency), and produces about six times as much heat with the same amounts of light from both sources.

 Light bulb - Wikipedia
The electric light bulb uses a glowing wire filament heated by electrical resistance to white heat to generate light (a process known as thermal radiation).
The invention of the light bulb is often attributed to Thomas Alva Edison.

The Great Internet Light Bulb Book, Part I
Since bulbs usually burn out during the current surge that occurs when they are turned on, one would expect that eliminating the surge would save light bulbs.
You may have heard that the life expectancy of a light bulb is roughly inversely proportional to the 12th or 13th power of the applied voltage.
Bulbs are so cheap compared to the electricity consumed by them during their lifetime that it pays to make them more efficient by having the filaments run hot enough to burn out after only several hundred to about a thousand hours or so.

How Things Work - Incandescent Light Bulbs
In this case, the infrared light is emitted by electrons that are shifting from one group of quantum levels in a semiconductor to another group--from conduction levels to valence levels.
Incidentally, the filament in many incandescent bulbs is treated with a small amount of a phosphorus-based "getter" that reacts with any residual oxygen that may be in the bulb the first time the filament becomes hot.
Incandescent light is the thermal radiation emitted by a hot object such as the filament of a light bulb or the surface of the sun.

After drying the glass surface of the bulb with ethyl ether swabs, we attempted to attach the suction cup end of the dart to the eletric bulb with cyanoacrylate cement.
Because this electric bulb was a large object (maximum diameter, 61 mm; length from metal end to top, 114 mm) made of fragile glass, special consideration had to be taken to avoid breakage that would have resulted in lacerations to the rectum and adjacent structures, with consequent complications.
Should this method be unsuccessful, the sigmoid colon must be opened and the bulb removed through the abdominal incision; however, opening the sigmoid colon is a very lenghy procedure with severe morbidity and a prolonged recovery period,, and this maneuver should be reserved as an extraordinary measure.

Between the years 1878 and 1892 the electric light industry was growing in terms of installed lights but shrinking in terms of company competition as both Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse determined to control the industry and its advancement.
The incandescent light bulb (archaically known as the electric lamp) uses a glowing wire filament heated to white-hot by electrical resistance, to generate light (a process known as thermal radiation or incandescence).
The bulb is the glass enclosure which keeps the filament in a vacuum or low-pressure noble gas, or a halogen gas in the case of quartz-halogen lamps in order to prevent oxidation of the filament at high temperatures.

 Howstuffworks "How Light Bulbs Work"
Before the invention of the light bulb, illuminating the world after the sun went down was a messy, arduous, hazardous task.
It took a bunch of candles or torches to fully light up a good-sized room, and oil lamps, while fairly effective, tended to leave a residue of soot on anything in their general vicinity.
The modern light bulb, which hasn't changed drastically since Edison's model, is made up of only a handful of parts.

The First True Incandescent Light Bulb
later, in 1875, Swan returned to consider the problem of the light bulb and, with the aid of a better vacuum and a carbonized thread as a filament (the same material Edison eventually decided upon), he successfully demonstrated a true incandescent bulb in 1878 (a year earlier than Edison).
why this is of interest to us here is that Edison's experiments with light bulbs led him to discover the Edison Effect, which ultimately led to the invention of the vacuum tube.
One of it's first uses was for lighting theater stages, and actors and actresses were keen to position themselves "in the limelight" so as to be seen to their best effect.

The light was composed of a glass bulb which surrounded a carbon wire filament, generally made of bamboo, paper or thread.
Because he was working at the time for US Electric Lighting Company, he was forced to assign the patent to the company, and thus lost out on the enormous financial rewards which would result.
Latimer abilities in electric lighting became well known and soon he was sought after to continue to improve on incandescent lighting as well as arc lighting.
