However, visible differences include the raised idler wheel, seven pistol ports ringing the turret compared with the M3's three, and the recoil mechanism of the 37mm gun extended from the gun shield and was therefore protected by armor.
This tank was in England in 1942 or 1943 and was part of a Lend-Lease shipment.

US Tank Classes (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.netlab.uky.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Note: Most tank classifications during this period were based on contemporary tank developments conducted during and immediately after WW I while the theory of tank usage was still in fluctuation.
Light Tanks, on the other hand, usually carry only the tank crew into combat even though the vehicle mission may be to support infantry in the assault.
Tanks classed as "Heavy" were so categorized by individual countries, which were few, and only one, the Soviet T-10M, is generally recognized as the last "heavy" built after 1950.

Tank classification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Light tanks tended to be smaller, faster, and lighter vehicles, and cheaper to produce.
Light tanks were quite common at the start of World War II, being the main element of German, Polish and French formations in the Polish and French campaigns, but during the war were relegated to reconnaissance roles because of the increasing firepower of tanks and anti-tank weapons.
In short, super heavy tanks were merely an extension of World War I ideals regarding heavy assault guns placed on self-propelled carriages, emulating the railway guns and heavy artillery of their time and with the rise of missile and rockets, extremely long-range guns became obsolete.

 M5A1 LIGHT TANK "STUART"
During the 1930's the United States Army did not consider tanks to be a relevant weapon on the battlefield.

Light tank also implies light firepower which, in the form of a 37mm main gun, was inferior to other combat vehicles at the time in the European theater.

Tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tanks are also at a disadvantage in wooded terrain and urban environments, which cancel the advantages of the tank's long-range firepower, limit the crew's ability to detect potential threats, and can even limit the turret's ability to traverse.
Tanks were first used in the First World War to break the deadlock of the trenches, and they evolved gradually to assume the role of cavalry on the battlefield.
Since an immobilised tank is an easy target for mortars, artillery, and the specialised tank hunting units of the enemy forces, speed is normally kept to a minimum, and every opportunity is used to move tanks on wheeled tank transporters and by railway instead of under their own power.
