On the (additional info and facts about UK canal system) UK canal system, the term barge is used to describe a boat wider than a (A long narrow boat used on canals to carry freight) narrowboat.
A barge pole is used by lightermen to fend off the barge as it nears other vessels or a wharf.
These long poles have given rise to the saying, "I wouldn't touch that (subject/thing) with a barge pole." The meaning is that something is so unseemly or contentious that the person wants to avoid it or being associated with it at all costs.

Many hands: Trades of the Port of London, 1850-1980 - Port communities - Port Cities
Lightermen had worked from the wharves for centuries, but secured the ‘free water clause’ exempting them from charges in the enclosed docks that were built during the 19th century.
This damaged the profitability of the docks and ensured that the volume of traffic handled by lightermen grew steadily throughout the 19th century.
The lightermen had an important voice in the running of the Port of London right up until the final closure of the docks in the 1980s.
