Lighthouses have been sources of salvation to sailors in littoral waters for hundreds of years, and they have served as the centres of coastal communities and coastal interaction.
In the past, lighthouses were burned down, lighthouses were blown up, and lighthouses were sledge-hammered, because it is not in the public interest to leave buildings of any kind, heritage or not, neglected and vulnerable to vandalism.
In addition, Canadian Heritage and Parks Canada are working with partners to build three essential tools to support engagement in the initiative: a Canadian register of historic places; conservation standards and guidelines; and a certification process to determine eligibility of expenses and proposals within the new HPI contribution program announced in the 2003 federal budget.

 Newfoundland and Labrador Lighthouses
A historic lighthouse, one of four "imperial towers" built on the northern approaches to the St. Lawrence in the 1850s and still one of the tallest lighthouses in Canada.
The lighthouse was in severe disrepair until it was rebuilt by local volunteers.
The only surviving lighthouse of its type in Canada, this building collapsed during a storm in October 1957 and was in ruins before it was rebuilt by a local preservation society in 1996-97.

This lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, just south of the capital city of Halifax, is one of the most photographed and well known ones in Canada, if not in the world.
Perhaps the thought of ships at sea in peril during rough weather plus the nostalgic image of the keeper and his family living quietly in or near the isolated structure and caring for the light.

Andrews Light is the oldest lighthouse on New Brunswick’s mainland, and one of only nine remaining octagonal wooden lighthouses in the province.
Of greater concern than the condition of the lighthouse itself was the deteriorated state of its foundation and the seawall surrounding it.
The lighthouse’s unique lantern was successfully removed from the lighthouse this past July, and was transported by truck to a local community college where it will be determined what parts can be salvaged and what needs to be fabricated.

The Pacific Coast of Canada was settled much later than the Atlantic Coast, for colonists had to either travel by ship south through the Strait of Magellan and then north along the coasts of South and North America or journey across the unknown wilderness of the Rocky Mountains.
Along with the Race Rocks Lighthouse, the Fisgard Island Lighthouse at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbor became the first lighthouse on the Canadian Pacific Coast in 1860.
A circular brick tower fifty-six feet high, the beacon of the Fisgard Island Lighthouse was illuminated by a coal-oil light and fitted with a dioptric apparatus to project the beam.

Now Belle Isle is in Newfoundland, which wasn't a province of Canada until 1949, but Canada built and maintained the lighthouses along the Strait of Belle Isle, the shortest route for ships sailing to Canada from Europe.

The first lighthouse that we got a good look at was the Port Dover Lighthouse which we passed by on the way out into the lake.
We got out to the Long Point Lighthouse by noon where we were able to take pictures, etc. The captain piloted the ship right up near the lighthouse.
Since the lighthouses sit out some distance on a breakwall, it was hard to get a good photo, even with telephoto.

Patterned after the lighthouse of Les Baleines built off La Rochelle in 1682, the beacon at Louisbourg was destroyed by British troops during the seige of 1758, and not rebuilt until 1842; the rubble of the original lighthouse is still visible at the base of the current Louisbourg lighthouse, which dates from 1924.
In 1813 the earliest lighthouse on Newfoundland was built at Fort Amherst to mark "The Narrows" of St. John's harbor.
An interesting screw-pile lighthouse was built at Sandheads off the mouth of the Fraser river in 1880; it was demolished in 1913 and replaced by a lightship.
