Lightning is one of the most unpredictable forces of nature there is. Common sense will help avoid an encounter with it more than anything.
Lightning is electricity that just traveled hundreds, and maybe thousands of yards through air, which is also an insulator.
That said: damage to electrical devices by lightning is somewhat rare considering the number of lightning strikes there are in a typical summertime.

 International Lightning Class Association
The Lightning, a 19 foot trailerable centerboard sloop, was originally designed by Sparkman and Stephens as an affordable family day-sailor and racing boat.
Awarded ISAF International Class status, the Lightning is sailed in more than 13 countries and in the Pan American Games, and the class provides a professionally-managed association that is among the largest in all of one-design sailing.
The Lightning's hard chine and 130 lb centerboard give her the stability and power of a small keel boat going to weather in strong winds and allow her to carry a very large spinnaker for breathtaking offwind rides.

Lightning struck the TV antenna on a coach at the Winnebago Grand National Ralley a few years ago and scorched an area on the headliner and probably did other damage.
Add seeing that to knowing that in one weekend here in Houston, both here and elsewhere in the state, back in the Spring half a dozen persons were killed in 3 separate strikes, with I believe it was 3-4 of them all under one tree.
The lightning is strong enough to travel for miles through the air, so 3 or 4 inches of rubber is not going to stop it.

According to race officials, Meech was thrown 30 feet by the force of the lightning strike, landing on his back.
"The Laser sailors were sailing back to the club through the moored yachts, on the assumption that lightning would hit the taller mast of one of these boats rather than a small dinghy mast," English added.
