The first lightvessel was the one off the Nore sandbank at the mouth of the River Thames in England, placed there by its inventor Robert Hamblin in 1732.
The lightvessel which operated at Minots Ledge, Cohasset, and Mass from 1854 until 1860 had a light yellow hull to make it visible against the blue-green seas and the green hills behind it.
They were invented by Robert Stevenson, and the first lightvessel equipped with one was a 82 ton converted fishing boat, renamed Pharos and which entered service on 15 September 1807 near to Bell Rock and which had a 1.5 ton example.

The Nore lightvessel, born of an idea by a certain Robert Hamblin, a barber of Lynn, was the first navigational aid of its type in maritime history.
In 1731, against the wishes of Trinity House, who considered the candle or oil lights to be ineffective as a guide to shipping, Avery moored the lightvessel on station.
Trinity House obtained the patent in perpetuity, and in 1733 granted Avery a 61 year lease on the vessel at a rent of one hundred pounds.

The demanning of the South Rock Lightvessel and its conversion to an automatic lightfloat marked the end of an important chapter in the maritime history of Co Down, and of Ireland, and it is one which deserves to be remembered.
