atoll - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
One of the largest atolls is also Lihou Reef in the Coral Sea, with a lagoon of 2500 km (which contrasts to a minuscule land area of 0.91 km).
The southernmost atolls of the world are Elizabeth Reef at 2958' South, and nearby Middleton Reef at 2929', in the Tasman Sea, which both belong to the Coral Sea Islands Territory.
The fringing reef becomes a barrier reef for the reason that the outer part of the reef maintains itself near sea level through biotic growth, while the inner part of the reef falls behind, becoming a lagoon where conditions are less favorable for the calcareous algae responsible for most reef growth.

Coral Sea Islands & Reefs : Lihou Reef
Lihou Reef (often referred to as Lihou Reef and Cays) is a huge horseshoe-shaped reef, located in the Coral Sea 575 km southeast of the Queensland city of Cairns — far beyond the boundaries of the Great Barrier Reef.
The vegetated cays are Turtle Islet, Lorna Cay, and along the southern arm of the reef Georgina Cay, Nellie Cay and Anne Cay.
Two of the cays of Lihou Reef have scientific installations installed: there is an automatic weather station on Turtle Islet (at the north-western end of the lagoon) and off the eastern tip of the reef a solar-powered navigation beacon has been set up.

It is clear that the reefs of the Lihou Reef National Nature Reserve are under significant pressure, especially from the effects of coral bleaching and cyclones.
This highlights the importance of maintaining a proportion of the reefs in the region as strict nature reserves (at present: Coringa-Herald NNR and Lihou Reef NNR) in an attempt to maintain the long-term viability of these habitats, ecosystems and native species, by preventing additional human impacts.
