Son of a Witch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shattered in spirit as well as in form, he is tended by the mysterious Candle, a foundling in her own right, until failed campaigns of his childhood bear late, unexpected fruit.
Liir is only one part of the world that Elphaba left behind.
She presents him to the wise Superior Maunt, who recognizes the hurt boy as Liir, rumored to be the dead Witch's secreted son.

Liir joins the Emperor's army to avoid starvation and quickly finds himself embroiled in atrocities against the starving masses.
Early on in the story, as Liir accompanies Dorothy on her quest to present the Witch's broom to the Wizard, they encounter scores of animals and people who were befriended by Elphaba.
But "Son of a Witch" relegates familiar characters to cameo appearances, focusing instead on Liir, who suffers from the imitative fallacy: His internal lack of direction is expressed in a meandering plot.

While in the army, Liir is ordered to take part in atrocities aimed at provoking an uprising and wanders back to the witch's castle where he decides to join a congress of birds who just might be the people to oppose the new government--a government which may be using dragons to enforce its rule.
Liir spent half the book in a coma, while we gradually learned his backstory through flashbacks, and the second half of the book wandering around trying to find himself.

Liir has a small nose that crinkles up when she is confused, a brow that always jumps up when she is being sarcastic or disbelieving and lips that automatically purse together in thought.
At first she was angered by this development, but soon Liir accepted it as her fate and with a couple of shed tears she said farewell to the Weavercraft and followed the bluerider back to the Weyr--ironically the home of her dragonrider parents.

The most likely candidate for that distinction was an unprepossessing, doughy boy called Liir, whose presence Elphaba seemed merely to tolerate and who was the constant butt of other children's horrid pranks.
Mystery surrounds his identity, though anyone will guess that it is Liir all grown up and, thank God, looking handsome -- despite the "discharge from his membranes," "blood blisters under the skin" and the "yellowish sweat" rolling off him.
Like the character Liir at its center ("a solitary figure untroubled by ambition, unfettered by talent, uncertain of a damn thing"), the novel suffers from entropy.

That character is Liir, who we last saw cowering in fear as Elphaba was killed; he had been traveling with her for as long as he can remember, and he may be -- no one is quite sure, even Elphaba -- her son.
At the heart of the problem is that Liir simply isn't as interesting a character as Elphaba was; for most of the book, he's an indecisive, passive character.
But even if Liir is a bit flat, Maguire's Oz is a marvelous place to visit, and his notions about the political realities of life there are intriguing.

It is the story of what happened to Liir, the son (probably) of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West).
The beginning of the book, before we go back into Liir’s memory and find out what has been happening to him since the Witch’s death, seems rather irrelevant by the time you get past it.
Nothing is revealed and little of flavour or depth is gained because it focuses entirely on the petty squabbles of the maunts (nuns) in a rather secluded place.
