HONOLULU -- State officials said the huge sinkhole that shut down the Likelike Highway is largely responsible for massive flooding in a Kalihi neighborhood this weekend.
She also said there are other areas along Likelike Highway where there are old culverts running under the highway that could cause a similar problem.
Likelike Highway is expected to reopen at 6:00 p.m.

In the mid-1990’s, Kahekili Highway was widened to six lanes from Likelike Highway to Kahuhipa Street, and to five lanes from Kahuhipa Street to Haiku Road.
Highway improvements should be limited to minor additions of turn lanes or stacking lanes, enhancements of landscaping and pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and traffic control features that improve safety and traffic flow and the aesthetic appearance of the right-of-way.
Park-and-ride lots are most likely to be located alongside a trans-Koolau highway and mauka of most residential neighborhoods so that commuters do not have to “double-back” their route to board the express bus.

Ishikawa says drivers are asked to take the Likelike Highway, the H-3 or the Kalanianaole Highway to travel between the Windward side and Honolulu.
No time or date has been set to re-open the highway, although Ishikawa says crews are on the scene working as quickly as they can to clear the tunnels and roads, despite the continuing heavy rains.
Ishikawa says it has continued to "rain cats and dogs” on the Pali Highway, creating a river on the highway that resembles the "chocolate river in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." The debris has been difficult to clean up because of all the water and the slippery and muddy conditions, he says.

We wanted to eventually get down to the golf course and look at a beautiful fl stone the engineers had found in the forest, so we kept an eye as we continued to where we were above it.
Finally we came to a highlight of the trail - a beautiful waterfall that comes from a hole in the crest at the Pali highway.
They came from the highway, now above us, and didn't plan to go further west on the route we'd come from.

In 1959, after Hawaii became a state, Congress felt both Alaska and Hawaii needed to be included in the interstate highway system, granting the new state of Hawaii 50 miles of this high-speed, limited access freeway for the highly populated island of Oahu.
To prevent any effect on H-3 travelers, a device known as a Faraday Shield was installed over a short section of the highway near the mouth of the tunnels to reduce the electric field.
A small group of opponents to the highway saw the shared border as an opportunity to use the park and Section 4f of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act to stop the construction of H-3.

Farrington Highway is currently being widened from two to four lanes between Fort Barrett Road and the Kapolei Golf Course, and further widening is planned out to Fort Weaver Road.
On the Windward side, Kahekili Highway was widened from two to six lanes between Likelike Highway and Kahuhipa Street and from two to four lanes from Kahuhipa Street to Haiku Road.
The intersection of Kahekili Highway and Likelike Highway has now been configured as a “jug handle” which is compatible with potential plans to implement an interchange at this location.

This would be the way if you traveled on the Pali Highway.
If you use the H-3 freeway take exit 9 which would be the Likelike Highway.
