Cryptozoology - Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Reported from the Likouala swamp region of the Republic of the Congo is a beast known as the Emela-Ntouka in Lingala for "Killer of Elephants." It is reported to be brown to gray in color, the size of an elephant with a crocodile-like tail, and to possess a single ivory horn on its nose.
According to the natives of the region it is an amphibious creature with the reported habit of disemboweling any elephants that happen upon its territory, yet it is said to eat malombo, leafy plant, and leaves.
Given the inhospitable nature of the Likouala region, it could be a great while before such a feat is accomplished.

 Mokele-mbembe: The Living Dinosaur!
When some of the local people of the Likouala region would draw in the dirt or sand a representation of Mokele-mbembe they drew the shape of a sauropod dinosaur.
This is probably due to the fact that Mokele-mbembe is used generically for other animals and the sound is being confused with Emela-ntouka which makes a sound like a snort, howl, roar, rumble, or growl.
The pygmies of the Likouala swamp region report that the essential diet of Mokele-mbembe consists of the Malombo plant.

According to the government's press release of 17 November 2004, Likouala SA belongs either to Total, the SNPC or ROC, or a combination of these actors, so this is not in fact an arms-length transaction.
However, Total wrote in its 2003 Annual Report that it has ceded its interest in the Likouala concession, and it confirmed in a letter to Global Witness that is ‘holds no interest in Likouala SA’. By implication, the ROC government must be the owner.
Assuming the government is not the owner of Likouala SA, then if it is true that Congo’s excess oil is used to repay the Likouala SA loan, it implies the government received much less for the Likouala concession on a net basis than the reported $80 million.

The main threat to some of the fauna is from hunting and poaching; in particular there is organized hunting of the larger species for bushmeat, elephants for ivory and meat, and gorillas for meat and fetishes.
The potential increase in commercial bushmeat hunting may in the future cause a reduction in animal populations in the Likouala swamps (Blake 1993).

Overall, we found that the Likouala aux Herbes had a low density of Nile crocodiles in areas downstream from Epena (we observed them between the villages of Edzema and Djeke), and dwarf crocodiles were widespread, but at low densities, in both seasonally inundated and swamp forest.
Based on limited data and interviews, in the Likouala region the crocodile reproductive period occurs somewhat later than in the Kabo/Pokola area with dwarf crocodiles laying eggs in March and hatchlings emerging in June.
Extensive wet season hunting of dwarf crocodiles was reported from the upper reaches of the Likouala, particularly in the town of Mokengi.

One day while paddling down the Likouala River in dugout canoes, his group heard a loud "plop" sound and a large wake splashed up on the far bank.
Mokele-mbeme!" Mackal and his colleagues believed that only a large animal diving under the water could have caused such a wake, and since hippos are not present in the Likouala area, they felt that they narrowly missed seeing the elusive dinosaur.

In the past the Congo had been the prime target for Mokele-mbembe investigators such as Dr. Roy P. Mackal and James Powell, Herman and Kia Regusters, Dr. Bill Gibbons and his two operation Congo teams, and Adam Davies.
Because of the unstable situation in the Congo, there was no possibility for a team of researchers to be able to safely find it's way to the Likouala and Lake Tele regions, so the safer confines of Cameroon seemed ripe for investigation, particularly because so many reports of sightings were filtering through.
In February, 2001, a newly founded organization dubbed Cryptosafari put together a team of investigators and researchers sent them on a mission to follow up reports emanating from Cameroon of an animal which was not supposed to exist today.

Since the first known sighting of this creature was reported by a man named Abbot Proyart, legends of this amazing animal have continued to filter out of the Likouala swamp area of the Congolese jungle (formerly known as Zaire) for well over a century.
On more than one occasion tribes have told investigators tales of hunters and fishermen who have unwittingly penetrated this creature's haunt, only to have their boats capsized while their helmsmen were held beneath the muddy waters of the Likouala by the animal's massive tail.
The corpses of these unlucky mariners have often washed ashore with their ribs crushed, but showing no signs of being eaten, which is consistent with the theories regarding the vegetarian diet of the Mokele-MBembe.
