Cryptozoology - Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Reported from the Likouala swamp region of the Republic of the Congo is a beast known as the Emela-Ntouka in Lingala for "Killer of Elephants." It is reported to be brown to gray in color, the size of an elephant with a crocodile-like tail, and to possess a single ivory horn on its nose.
According to the natives of the region it is an amphibious creature with the reported habit of disemboweling any elephants that happen upon its territory, yet it is said to eat malombo, leafy plant, and leaves.
Given the inhospitable nature of the Likouala region, it could be a great while before such a feat is accomplished.

Likouala region (66,044 square kilometres) is the largest region in the country.
The population is small (70,700 inhabitants) and unequal: it is concentrated in the administrative centres, such as Impfondo, the capital of the region.
The only way to access the region is the river in a seasonal way - to date, it is inaccessible by road - and planes (C-class aerodrome - single-engined planes), which is a significant handicap for the economic activity to regularly develop.

However, though many protected areas are large, land-use practices in bordering areas often threaten species that roam outside of the park or reserve during certain periods of the year or during dispersal periods of their life cycles.
