Lili Marleen was originally a poem, The Song of a Young Sentry, written by a German soldier, Hans Leip, before he was sent to the Russian front in 1915.
By the time Marlene Dietrich had incorporated a haunting, husky (and slightly flat) rendition of Lili Marleen into her repertoire, and sung it to American infantrymen in Germany, it was established as the most popular war song ever.
Lili Marleen remained popular long after the war had ended and various versions of it were in the American charts in 1968, the German charts in 1981 and, somewhat to Schultze's surprise, the Japanese charts in 1986.

 Honey, Honey... Be My Valentine!
Lili and Marleen were in their bed, slumbering peacefully, and the clock showed it was nearly 6 o'clock in the morning.
Marleen was wearing her short, red nightgown, and she lay at the left edge of the bed, in a fetal position, because someone had stolen her covers and the smaller Lili had claimed the rest of the king sized bed for herself.
Lili's back arched and her eyes rolled back in her head, as her hands entwined in the long hair of her lover, holding the dark head close to her, while rocking against that talented lips and tongue that made her lose control and set her on the path to the point of no return.

Bright Lights Film Journal | Norbert Schultze
When Norbert Schultze, one of the most famous film composers of the twentieth century, died in 2002, the overwhelming majority of obituaries in the Western press focused on the old chanson, “Lili Marleen,” the song that marked his career and relatively short period of work in Nazi Germany.
His war engagement is marked by two compositions, “Lili Marleen” and the march “Bombs on England.” Using the collection of poems by Hans Leip, Schultze composed ten songs, amongst them “Lili Marleen,” yet they were initially regarded as too subtle and delicate.
“Lili Marleen” was for the first time performed on the radio in 1938, by actress Lale Andersen (Liselotte Wilke).

The lyric of "Lili Marleen" (as it was originally known) was written by an obscure soldier, Hans Leip (1894-1983), while he was serving in the German infantry in 1917.
An English version was quickly produced by Tommy Connor, removing a lingering suggestion that Lili was a prostitute, and it continued on its way as a favourite of both opposing sides.
Leip himself always denied that Lili was of shady inclinations and said that he had based her on two girls, Lili and Marleen, whom he had known in Berlin while on leave.
