 Lili: A Novel of Tiananmen
"Lili: A Novel of Tiananmen" is inspired by the June 1989 bloody denouement of pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, exploring the role of this very brutal and public event on the inner self of a young woman.
Wang says Lili's cynicism and selfishness are emblematic of an entire generation of young Chinese brought up on a steady diet of lies and institutionalized hatred in the years of the Cultural Revolution.
Wang says she is not worried about the book's success--or lack thereof--if it should surface in her native country.

 Lili:  a Novel
As the daughter of a top Beijing journalist, Wang grew up enjoying all the perks available to the children of China's elite: she and her friends had access to the latest American movies and rock 'n' roll recordings and were able to read books that were banned or simply unavailable elsewhere on the mainland.
Lili follows the progress of its eponymous heroine from her imprisonment for 'hooliganism' - a crime which, in her case, amounts to consorting with and having sexual relations with Beijing street toughs - to her political and psychological coming-of-age that culminates with the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.
Goldstein not only leads Lili to 'see China through his eyes', explains the book's blurb, but enables her to 'comprehend the magnitude of the changes that are sweeping across her country and to appreciate being a part of something greater than herself'.

by Bruce Humes
Author Wang Lili isn’t fond of this topic, perhaps because journalists in Shanghai where she is now comfortably ensconced like to classify her as a dagong mei writer.
Wang Chuchu sympathizes with her co-workers, but one senses a distance from them due to her education and sense of mission; she is bound for something greater.
No, rather Wang Chuchu is a heroine, armed with a fierce dedication to justice and fighting for respect in a Special Economic Zone world dominated by unfeeling managers, themselves manipulated by greedy and lawless Hong Kong and Taiwanese capitalists.

 Dancing with Dogs: "Wolf! Wolf!"
Lili Wang, a 31-year-old computer science graduate student at North Carolina State University, was murdered last week by Richard Borrelli Anderson, a white classmate who had become infatuated with her.
Wang was already married (to another Chinese American), but this fact did nothing to deter Anderson's advances, which appear to have been racially motivated.
Although no definitive conclusions can be drawn from these press reports, if it is the case that Anderson singled Wang out first as the target of his unwanted advances, and then for murder, because of her race, then the crime should be reported and recognized as a hate crime.
