Lilian Mary Baylis CH (9 May 1874–25 November 1937) was a British theatrical producer and manager and the founder of a ballet company.
One of her finest achievements at the Old Vic was to produce a full cycle of Shakespeare's plays, starting with The Taming of the Shrew in 1914 to Troilus and Cressida in 1923.
Baylis was awarded an honorary Master’s degree from Oxford University in 1924, only the second such honour to be given to a woman by the university.

The Baylis Theatre opened in October 1988 and it appeared that a permanent theatre company might emerge, but this was limited by funding difficulties.

Lilian Baylis was lessee and manager of London Old Vic from 1912 until her death in November 1937.
Lilian Baylis joined her aunt, Emma Cons, in 1897, to assist with the running of the Royal Victoria Coffee Music Hall which had been established to provide educational and moral entertainment for working class people.
After the death of her aunt, Lilian Baylis established a Shakespeare Company and successfully created an environment which allowed great artists to flourish, despite constant financial limitations, no formal artistic training, and within a male-orientated society.

An elaborate extravaganza was held at the end of the Christmas term to say a final goodbye to the old school building with magicians, jugglers, fire-eaters and trick cyclists mingling with the students, ending with a spectacular fireworks display.
The school is named after the theatrical personality, Lilian Baylis, who managed London’s Old Vic from 1912 to her death in 1937, and in 1927 rebuilt the derelict Sadler’s Wells Theatre, making it a centre of opera and ballet.
