Lillian May Davies was born on 30 August 1915 in Swansea, Wales to William and Gladys Mary Davies.
It was at this time, in 1943, with the sound of bombs reverbating loudly throughout London and the rest of Europe, that Lilian met Prince Bertil of Sweden, who was 31 at the time, and the third son of King Gustav VI Adolf and his first wife Princess Margaret of Connaught.
On 30 August 1943, her friends threw the exuberant and friendly Lilian a cocktail party (as was the fashion at the time) to celebrate her 28th birthday.
