Liliopsida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liliopsida is the botanical name for a class.
Modern systems, such as the APG and APG II systems refer to this group by the name monocots (a name for a clade).
Therefore in practice the name Liliopsida will almost surely refer to the usage as in the Cronquist system.

Category:Liliopsida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This category is for plants in the class Liliopsida, the Monocotyledons or monocots.
They are a group of flowering plants usually ranked as a class and once called the Monocotyledoneae.
Flowering plants not included in the Liliopsida are dicotyledons or dicots, categorized as Magnoliopsida.

 Liliopsida --  Encyclopædia Britannica
The Liliopsida are also known under the more descriptive taxon name Monocotyledoneae.
The term refers to the most characteristic feature of the group, the single cotyledon in the embryo of the seed.
Members range in size from the tiny duckweed (Lemna minor) to the enormous mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans).

 The Classification Of Liliopsids
Liliopsida (liliopsids in English) were once called Monocotyledoneae (monocotyledons or monocots, in English).
If the formal name, 'Liliopsida', is used, it should be capitalized.
Liliopsida are divided into about 19 orders: Alismatales, Arales, Arecales, Bromeliales, Commelinales, Cyclanthales, Cyperales, Eriocaulales, Hydatellales, Hydrocharitales, Juncales, Liliales, Najadales, Orchidales, Pandanales, Restionales, Triuridales, Typhales, and Zingiberales.

In some families such as in some of the spurge family members or some pea family members, they may be spines rather than leaf-like.
The veins in leaves may be parallel as in the Liliopsida or they may form a network as in the Magnoliopsida.
In many monocots (Liliopsida) such as grasses, the radicle may stop growing and the subsequent root system is composed entirely of adventitious roots.

The dicots are distinguished from the other class of flowering plants, the Liliopsida (monocotyledons), by the features listed in the key to groups (part 1, page 56).
The Liliopsida are treated in part 1 of this guide.
Plants achlorophyllous (saprophytes and parasites, in our flora the parasitic Rafflesiaceae produce flowers from the trunk of Flacourtiaceae, the flowers are easily interpreted as flowers of the host.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Alismatidae -- Spring 1999
He considered the subclass "to be the most archaic group of Liliopsida" although they "can scarcely be on the main line of evolution of the class, because a primitive monocot should have binucleate pollen and endospermous seeds" (Cronquist, 1981: 1040).
The two features that establish the Liliopsida as a monophyletic group are their single cotyledon and their sieve tube plastids with the accumulate protein in a triangular form.
While plants with otherwise dicotyledonous features may have only a single cotyledon, this is a secondary feature, and only two genera of dicotyledonous genera have similar plastids, Saruma and Asarum, both piperoids in the Aristolochiaceae.

The Taxonomy and Phylogeny of the Angiosperms - Peter Morrell
In recent years the old classification has been drastically revised, mosty through the work of taxonomists Arthur Cronquist in the USA and Armen Takhtajan in Russia.
The Angiosperms are now divided into two groups [classes] like before, but now called Magnoliopsida [Magnolia like] and the Liliopsida [Lily like] - being broadly the same as the older Dicots and Monocots respectively.
The Liliopsida are divided into only 4 sub-classes and again into orders and families.

Botany: Liliopsida - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
The Class Liliopsida constitutes the monocotyledonous angiosperms and includes some of the largest plant families such as the orchids with some 20,000 species and the grasses with perhaps 15,000 species.
In the previous chapter we learned how to separate the two major flowering plant groups: the dicotyledons and the monocotyledons, and covered a number of dicot families.

The traditional scientific name for this group is Monocotyledones, although recently, e.g.
in the Cronquist system, it has been called Liliopsida (class, based on Lilium).
As the monocots are a group above the rank of family there is a free choice of name; Article 16 of the ICBN allows either a descriptive name or a name based on a generic name.

This alignment features the Alismatidae as the extant monocot element that carries the greatest number of archaic features (similar to the 'original' monocot) and the Liliidae (Orchids and relatives) as the most 'derived' or specialized element of the Class.
