Lilith Silver (Eileen Daly) is attempting to stop the duel between her lover and Sir Sethane Blake (Christopher Adamson).
Lilith dresses in the stereotypical fetish/goth garb of modern vampires -- leather, latex, dark eyeliner, etc. But this costume allows her to blend in with the vampire wanna-bes.
Lilith Silver is not going to be the next Xena or Lara Croft, but she’s a fun character who’s out to have a good time, and with this film, you may too.

As the film opens in the past, fl and white film was used to create the period atmosphere, and the majority of the past action was shot in slow motion.
As Lilith is shot and supposedly dying the grainy quality of the fl and white becomes more pronounced and the vividness of the blood is the only colour in the scene as Lilith is laid out on a blood-soaked bed to await her end.
Lilith's philosophy is simple: she didn't choose to be a vampire but now that she is one she might as well be pragmatic and face up to it.

Lilith was living a couple of centuries ago and her boyfriend and some guy got into a gun duel, in which her boyfriend dies.
So Lilith goes and kills a guy, that she probably shouldn't have because he is part of a cult or group or something wear they all wear rings with plastic eye-balls on them.
Lilith is now out to defend her life, or lack of, since she is a vampire and all, from the eye-ball ring toting cult guys.

Lilith (1964): Warren Beatty, Jean Seberg, Peter Fonda - PopMatters Film Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
Lilith is the last film by writer-director Robert Rossen, a Communist party member who eventually named names before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953 after suffering two years on the fllist.
Lilith's seductive self-involvement, irresistible to fellow patients and doctors alike, and her childish eagerness to please are inseparable from her seething malevolence at the world's fundamental intractability.
The cultural depiction of female madness has a long, dubious history, and as with most films about insane women, it's difficult to decide whether the film is a proto-feminist indictment of how a sexist culture drives women insane, or whether it actually embraces sexist notions of inherent female instability and narcissism.

Lilith quickly begins to allow Vincent into her own private world, which at first does not seem too warrant the precautions that are taken to keep her safe, and to keep the staff and other patients safe from her.
Lilith gives the impression of being an almost magical creature, with astonishingly clear insights into herself and her fellow beings.
But Lilith seems to exert an amazing, almost hypnotic power that draws Vincent along until he has fallen in love with her, scandalously breaking the bounds between patient and doctor.

This "film" starts off in modern-looking fl and white, although we guess they were trying to make this scene look very archaic because it looks as if it is set in the 1800s.
The film then moves to modern day, and this woman, known to her contemporaries as Lilith Silver, is now a hit woman who drinks the blood of her targets.
The only character who knows the truth to Lilith's dark secret is this lame detective who is eventually staked by her -- he wraps the mortal wound with one layer of gauze and takes PCP from the evidence room for a painkiller.

Lilith's betrayal by Adam in Eden and subsequent vow of revenge is recast as a modern tale with present-day Lilith (Cherie Wallace) musing on a life that has included giving up a baby for adoption and work as a bar dancer.
As part of a funky mixed-media lecture I do with the film, I present footage from a 1950's eponymous film starring Jean Seberg, an old documentary on spiders, images of my daughter's sonogram before her birth and a comic strip featuring Lilith as an evil demoness.

Lilith's strongest asset is the sight of magical actress Jean Seberg photographed by the legendary cameraman Eugen Schufftan.
In perhaps the film's most beautiful sequence, she hikes up her dress to walk in the shallows of a pond and leans over to the mirror-like surface to kiss her reflection.
Critics were impressed by the film's depiction of her lesbian association with another patient played by Anne Meachum, a relationship Lilith flaunts to further disturb the defenseless Vincent.

The space of the film is a public one; an intersection of streets in a poor neighbourhood, dominated by the overhead freeway of the title.
When projected the film resembles a moving impressionist painting but the passing of time is not represented by the coloured marks of a painters brush but by the colored emulsion of the film stock.
The film is a study of the undulating chiaroscuro of rivers, creeks and shorelines in fl, white, and silver.

Other comments on this film have more than adequately discussed the plots and motivations of the characters; what I found unexpectedly mesmerizing and appalling was its view of the mental institution of the mid-1960s.
The inmates seem to be mostly left to do as they please, whether it be teetering at the edge of a precipitous cliff or wandering off in the woods, easily slipping away from their inattentive keepers.

Getting back to Lilith Fair as a whole, (I attended in 1998 and 1999), I was impressed at how the artists performed with one another throughout the event.
It's fun to see the artists sing and play each other's music because it shows that they are people just like us who admire one another for their various talents.
In its brief lifespan Lilith matured into a wonderful expression of collaboration and openness, demonstrating to us how music is a common thread that weaves us all together even in these drastically changing times.

Whatever it might mean, the "dreamy" music and the stark fl and white film convey the mood of the book quite well, and borders on what one might perceive as a "horror" film.

What ultimately makes the film so unusual and even a bit subversive is that for such a dark vision, the film operates well within the glossy studio sheen of the '40s.
