Liliw was founded in 1571 by Gat Tayaw, the eldest son of Gat Tayapan Manggop, assisted by Andres Basilan or Bansalan Humanda, Diego Mandig and Don Juan Masulong, the eldest son of Gat Tayaw.

Surprisingly, although Liliw has been quietly into the footwear industry for almost 50 years now, it was only three years ago when the Liliw Tourism Council made it formal to mark an annual "Liliw Gat Tayaw Tsinelas Festival" for the town.
Liliw formally became the “Footwear capital of Laguna” through Resolution No.38-S-2003 of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Laguna through the Resolution No.405-S-2003 dated August 4, 2003.

Incidentally, the growth of Liliw’s industry has resulted in a huge boost in tourism, and, consequently, resulted in the creation of the Annual Liliw Tsinelas Festival five years ago.
This year, the 5th Liliw Tsinelas Festival, held on the last week of April, featured a special documentary-type fashion show, directed by Excie, which began with a portrayal of the history of the tsinelas industry and then ended with the current trends and top designs produced by the local stores.
Places to stay at Liliw include the Batis ng Liliw and the Liliw Resort, which, apart from general resort amenities, has a bathing stream with water from the foot of Mt. Banahaw.

On my way home to Manila, I dropped by San Pablo’s neighboring town Liliw which is just 30 minutes or so away.
Going there, we passed by the towns of Rizal, Nagcarlan (site of the Underground Cemetery) and Alaminos (where another tourism spot, the Hidden Valley is located.) Liliw is famous for being a prime producer of tsinelas (native slippers) and in fact held its annual tsinelas festival recently.
Liliw was a revelation and I didn’t regret going here a bit.

In keeping with its commitment to a single digit turnaround time from takeover, state deposit insurer Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) announced that it would start servicing claims for insured deposits of depositors of the closed Rural Bank of Lilio (Liliw, Laguna) today, June 17, five working days from its takeover of the closed bank.
The PDIC advised depositors to proceed to the bank’s offices, all located in the province of Laguna, where they maintained their accounts, during the period designated.
