It was used later on that century as a marching song by soldiers, and also as a tune for political songs in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Its attribution to the English composer Henry Purcell, who published “Lillibullero” in his compilation Music's Handmaid of 1689 as a “new Irish tune”, is doubtful.
In later years the BBC has used “Lillibullero” as its signature tune for its World Service broadcasts.

Lillibullero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lillibullero is a march that sets the words of a satirical ballad generally said to be by Lord Thomas Wharton to music attributed to Henry Purcell.
The lyrics refer to the effects in Ireland of the Glorious Revolution, an episode in the history of Great Britain and Ireland in which King James II abdicated and fled, and William III was invited by Parliament to the throne.
The tune of Lillibullero was adopted by the British Broadcasting Corporation's World War II programme Into Battle and became the unofficial march of the Commando Regiment of the British Army.

The gigs had leaned to their right, but Hunter and I pulled straight in, in the direction of the stockade upon the chart.
The two who were left guarding their boats seemed in a bustle at our appearance; "Lillibullero" stopped off, and I could see the pair discussing what they ought to do.
There was a slight bend in the coast, and I steered so as to put it between us; even before we landed we had thus lost sight of the gigs.

Wharton, Thomas Wharton, 1st Marquis of (1648-1715).—Statesman and writer of “Lillibullero,” son of the 4th Baron Wharton, was one of the most profligate men of his age.
His only contribution to literature was the doggerel ballad, “Lillibullero” (1688), which had so powerful a political effect that its author claimed to have sung a King out of three kingdoms.
He was generally disliked and distrusted, but held for a short time, from 1708, the Lord Lieutenancy of Ireland, when he had Addison as his chief sec.

Christopher Jones said "I felt so sad when I heard that the BBC world service had scuttled Lili Bolero (Lillibullero) and replaced that famous march with a lot of CNNish trumpets, gongs and so on".
George Sassoon came to the rescue: " I am very sorry to hear this too - I was looking forward to hearing the tune on the BBC short wave when we go abroad next week.

Of the pupils the two young people were but lazy scholars, and as my lady would admit no discipline such as was then in use, my lord’s son only learned what he liked, which was but little, and never to his life’s end could be got to construe more than six lines of Virgil.
Mistress Beatrix chattered French prettily, from a very early age; and sang sweetly, but this was from her mother’s teaching—not Harry Esmond’s, who could scarce distinguish between “Green Sleeves” and “Lillibullero;” although he had no greater delight in life than to hear the ladies sing.
He sees them now (will he ever forget them?) as they used to sit together of the summer evenings—the two golden heads over the page—the child’s little hand, and the mother’s beating the time, with their voices rising and falling in unison.

The interval signal had several variations including timpani, the first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (which coincide with the letter "V"), and electronic tones which are still in use today for some Western European services.
The World Service's classic signature tune Lillibullero is broadcast just before the top of many hours, followed by the Greenwich Time Signal (five short and one long pips) and the hourly news.
Until fairly recently, the hourly sequence was preceded by the announcement "This is London" — it is now followed by a more promotional "Wherever you are, however you listen, this is the BBC" or "With world news every half hour, this is the BBC".

Music's Sentimental Role in Tristram Shandy Papers on Language and Literature - Find Articles
We may consider ourselves lucky that Laurence Sterne did not have the modern musical greeting-card at his disposal.
Imagine opening Tristram Shandy at volume six and hearing a recording of asses braying "G-sol-re-ut" until the page was turned, or listening to an electronically whistled "Lillibullero" through much of volume three.
Given Sterne's penchant for demonstrative devices like pointing hands and squiggly lines, one might not be surprised to hear some of the novel's music realized in sound.

One of the characteristics of the good old soldier is his trick of whistling Lillibullero.
But in truth the success of Lillibullero was the effect, and not the cause, of that excited state of public feeling which produced the Revolution.
While James was thus raising against himself all those national feelings which, but for his own folly, might have saved his throne, Lewis was in another way exerting himself not less effectually to facilitate the enterprise which William meditated.
