		Its attribution to the English composer Henry Purcell, who published “Lillibullero” in his compilation Music's Handmaid of 1689 as a “new Irish tune”, is doubtful.
		In later years the BBC has used “Lillibullero” as its signature tune for its World Service broadcasts.

		Lillibullero is a march that sets the words of a satirical ballad generally said to be by Lord Thomas Wharton to music attributed to Henry Purcell.
		The lyrics refer to the effects in Ireland of the Glorious Revolution, an episode in the history of Great Britain and Ireland in which King James II abdicated and fled, and William III was invited by Parliament to the throne.
		The tune of Lillibullero was adopted by the British Broadcasting Corporation's World War II programme Into Battle and became the unofficial march of the Commando Regiment of the British Army.

		Purcell probably hijacked the tune as his own - common practice in the musical world of that time.
		Although "Lillibullero" doesn't occur in most ITM tune compilations I have found it in a New England fiddler's tunebook published some years ago.
		At a session at the Plume of Feathers in Bristol a couple of days ago a singer sang this tune with the lyrics of the traditional song "Nottingham Ale" - words which look as if they are as old as the tune Lillibullero itself.
