To get your machine started, the LILO boot system has to find the kernel code and load it; once the kernel is runing, the kernel can take over and load its modules.
LILO is the boot manager that most of us use.
LILO starts up right after the bios, and pauses for a few seconds to allow you to select boot options.

Once the laptop is powered on, there is a query (called the LILO boot prompt): LILO boot: or boot: If you don't do anything, after 50 secs, the laptop will be automatically booted with Linux by default; see the file /etc/lilo.conf and its man page for more details.
The complete documentation for lilo can be found in /usr/doc/lilo* (the * is there to replace the version number of lilo), and in particular the file user.tex or directly running xdvi on the file /usr/doc/lilo*/user.dvi (which is referred to in the man page of lilo).

The executable needs access to some config file, and some other data files.

The minor issue I had were that Ubuntu includes hibernate scripts for suspending to RAM and to disk on ACPI events.
If you want to suspend to disk, you need to include 'resume=/dev/hda5' into the grub config, assuming that hda5 is your swap partition.
However I configured it, this didn't work - nothing was displayed when lilo finished loading the kernel.
