Lily Afshar: I had met him backstage after a concert in Boston years before, just to shake his hand and get his autograph, but the master class was the first time I sat next to him and played for him.
Lily Afshar: They are interested, I have a lot of women in my classes in Iran, a lot, but the thing is, they have to seriously pursue it in college if they want to perform at a professional level, and that means a lot of sacrifices have to be made.
Lily Afshar: Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco had actually gone to the Museo del Prado in Madrid with his grandparents when he was a teenager and when he wrote the pieces many years later he had a book of Goya's Los Caprichos that included "Capricho 81", which Goya had removed from the collection.

Afshar's performance is characterized by a warm, rich sound that brings out both the stateliness and mystery of the piece.
Afshar's performance of Capricho No. 5, El amor y la muerte, is particularly noteworthy in that she captures the rhythmic feel of the tango in the repeated chords used throughout the piece.
Afshar plays this final piece with a similar feeling to the first piece, since the two pieces have in common a musical motto on Goya's name and a fugue.

TEHRAN, Aug. 4 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iranian guitarist Lily Afshar performed a piece for peace in Lebanon during her concert at Tehran's Vahdat Hall on Thursday night.
Afshar previously gave a benefit concert for the quake-stricken city of Bam in London at Notting Hill's 20th Century Theater.
She was the first Iranian woman to earn a doctorate in guitar performance, which she received from Florida State University.

I am absolutley enthralled with her playing; still prefer all of the tracks on the "Jug of Wine" CD' though.
Her playing is technically impeccible, her interpretations are inspiring, and her selection of repertoire is innovative and enjoyable.
The album has new works no one has ever heard before (some written for her) and it also has works by known composers like Brouwer and Morel.
