Victorian Railways extended this line to Camberwell in 1882 and Ringwood and Lilydale in 1883 and Healesville in 1889.
The Hurstbridge line was extended to Eltham in 1912 and Hurstbridge in 1912 and it was electrified between 1921 and 1926.
The Epping line was electrified to Reservoir in 1921, Thomastown in 1929, Lalor in 1959 and Epping in 1964.

From the opening of the railways in 1855 until the erection of the bridge in 1889, the line from Sydney to Newcastle, a port a hundred miles north of the capital and the second city of the State, was divided by the river.
The first railway was opened in 1871 between Launceston, in the north of the island, and Deloraine, to the west, and was forty-five miles in length.
The line is remarkable for the views its affords, as it follows the gorges of the Great King River, giving vistas of awesome canyons and magnificent forests of beech trees, with grass-trees, ferns, berries and wild flowers in profusion.

Lilydale, 39 kilometres west-north-west of Melbourne via the Maroondah Highway, could be described as the gateway to the Yarra Valley wine-growing area.
In fact Lilydale was constituted as a district and the Upper Yarra Roads Board was constituted that year (it did not hold its first meeting until 1862), bringing some form of local administration although Lilydale shire was not formed until 1872.
When she died large crowds lined the streets of the funeral procession which conveyed her from Melbourne to Lilydale where it was met by a guard of honour who conveyed the hearse to a gun carriage and from there to the Lilydale cemetery where she was laid to rest in a family plot.

Melbourne has a number of key projects currently ongoing due to a massive investment by the Department of Infrastructure of the State Government of Victoria.

The Railways Department later planned a new Flinders Street Station extending from Russell to Queen Streets, with connection to Spencer Street over a viaduct and platforms at Flinders Street to serve Williamstown, Essendon and Coburg line trains.
In 1889, the Railway Commissioners arranged a competition for the design of a new station, and 17 entries were received.
The old Port Melbourne and St Kilda line platform verandah was far too good to throw away, so the department had it dismantled and re-erected at Hawthorn, which in those days, was a much busier station.

At last Melbourne had a standard tram to replace the multiplicity of tram designs that the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board inherited when it took over the suburban tramways trusts in 1919.
Melbourne finally said farewell to the W2 class in 1987.
The tram was sold in full working order to Paul Class of Gales Creek Enterprises in the USA, which overhauled it and sold it to the Waterfront Streetcar line in Seattle where the tram is now running in regular service.

 Ringwood Railway Station
The railway line from Melbourne commenced its eastward development in 1861 when it reached Hawthorn.
It was extended to Camberwell in April 1882 and the final section, from Camberwell to Lilydale, opened as a whole in December 1882.
Reflecting the priorities of the time, the first main building at the station was a railway goods shed, built in 1887 to serve what would have been predominantly a goods, rather than passenger, railway.

After some minor adjustments to the unloading ramp, RM22 was started and gently rolled of the truck and onto the YVTR for the first time in around 30 years after finishing her stint on the Lilydale to Healesville Railway back in the late 70’s.
RM22 under its own power gently moved into the Healesville Platform, for many on board this was the first experience of riding a train at the YVTR and the first time they had arrived on a train at the Healesville Station.

The trail starts in Lilydale at the former bridge crossing on Maroondah Highway and follows the former train line all the way to Warburton, a distance of 38 km.
Built in 1901, the railway line from Warburton once carried produce and timber from the many sawmills to Melbourne and delivered tourists to the area on the return trip.
The railway line from Lilydale was closed on 13 December, 1964.

The Yarra Valley Tourist Railway uses the 5'3" line which formerly ran from Lilydale to Healesville, 60 km east of Melbourne.
Hello Bob, It is wonderful to see some old railway and station if not an origional engine and carriages.
I love old railways and anything to do with them, it would be great to take the journey you have just took, the last time I was on a train like this was in Young back in the late 1970's.
