And the good news is that Limbo, which unusually for Sayles was financed by a major studio, is perhaps his riskiest work to date.
Suddenly Limbo becomes a tale of desperate survival, with the three central characters adrift on an inhospitable island and facing the horrifying prospect that there may not be any rescuers.
Limbo includes superb acting from Strathairn and Mastrantonio (who proves a highly accomplished lounge-bar singer) and confident shooting from cinematographer Haskell Wexler.

In all of his films, Sayles has the keen ability to capture ideas and voices and present them in film as both a running commentary on human beings and as a compelling story.
Surrounding this love affair between Joe and Donna and the uneasy relationship between Noelle and her mother, is, as in all Sayles films, a healthy set of supporting stories that color in the backdrop of the locale and community.
Magnolia, Limbo and The Dreamlife of Angels all leave questions in the viewer at their close, but Magnolia is so brilliantly designed that it seems like those questions are a boon.

Limbo, in some Christian theologies, is the place between heaven and hell, a permanent state of suspension.
As the film starts, its brokenhearted, small-town Alaskan characters are getting older and further removed from the pasts that haunt them, but they're unable to move forward into any kind of satisfying future.
The first half of the film leisurely examines the deterioration and possible salvation of the soul in a once-glorious, rapidly disintegrating landscape.

Limbo is defined as the dwelling place of lost souls, or as a place where a person is in an uncertain condition.
In the end of the film, because the three characters have become a family, they realize that, in order to survive, they will have to take the risk of standing on the shore and waiting for whomever is in the plane.
LIMBO was a character-driven movie because by the end of the film you know the characters well.

 Film Review: LIMBO
The basic plot of his new film Limbo clearly embodies that film-making ethos: the first half of the film opens out with a broad panoramic view of the inhabitants of a bleak Alaskan fishing town, where the run-down former industries are starkly contrasted with the trite marketing of the tourist trade.
Just as the first part of the film anticipates the later crises with reference to the threat from the natural elements, and from the dangers of ruthless profiteering, so the later drama somehow brings out qualities in the main characters (both good and bad) which were already latent in the early scenes.
Limbo is a film about the ‘big questions’ in life but wears its baggage lightly. Finally, I’ve read elsewhere that the ending of the film is a disappointment.

This non-mainstream-friendly film, in which most of the dialogue was in Spanish and various aboriginal tongues, explored the unexpected social turmoil caused by Western civilization and progress.
At this point in the film, it appears that Sayles is about to illustrate the dynamics of the community through the relationships between his three principal characters, in a similar fashion to the theme-driven "Lone Star" and "City of Hope".
"Limbo" is a film that dwells on 'unexpected outcomes', and true to this thematic subtext, Sayles has deliberately structured his film in a most unexpected manner.

As with his previous film, Lone Star (1996), which was set in a tiny Texas border town, Limbo is on the edge of civilization, where wilderness and wildness run hand in hand.
The film documents a changing Alaska, from the closing of a large salmon cannery and the decline of commercial fishing to the proliferation of the bed-and-breakfast tourist industry.
Limbo's storytelling, a thread which runs throughout the movie, draws richly from the local fishing culture, where tall tales (some true, some just tall) are told nightly around the bar.

 Limbo
A couple of decades ago Jimmy Cliff sang "Sitting right here in limbo, waiting for the dice to roll." The feeling of waiting for your life to begin again is becoming more universal in a world where the individual shrinks from the landscape as the population explodes exponentially.
In LIMBO, John Sayles captures this peculiar dislocation in subtle shades of anxiety and angst, with an edge of suspense and a surprising ending that is both ingenious and frustrating.
Sayles' films take the time to develop characters and plot in a manner largely ignored by most contemporary filmmakers, which ultimately is the reason he has been this country's most marketable independent, and most ignored by the PR departments at large movie studios.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is also good as a bar singer (she sings pretty well too) hauling her teenage daughter (Vanessa Martinez, very good in her debut) through gig after gig.
The film also has some thriller elements; but, this of course, is Sayles, who wisely pushes for character development and dialogue ladened with truth.

 LIMBO
According to the dictionary, "Limbo" is defined as "the abode of just or innocent souls excluded from the beatific vision but not condemned to further punishment," "a region or condition of oblivion or neglect," "a state or place of confinement," and/or "an intermediate place or state."
Described by a diary passage found in director John Sayles intriguing film of the same title, limbo isn't heaven, it's too cold to be hell, and certainly isn't purgatory because there's no end to it.
No matter the definition, that limbo theme permeates Sayles' film, from the richly drawn characters and their lives to an unresolved ending that may leave audiences perplexed and/or irritated, but ultimately is in keeping with the film's overall nature.

Sayles' films crisscross the country from the backwoods of West Virginia (Matewan) to a Texas border town (Lone Star).

Yet "Limbo" quickly and surprisingly turns into an unusual exercise for Sayles, as a frantic narrative situation emerges, and the characters face problems that transcend personal sadness and community conflict.
"Limbo" begins as an ensemble piece, painting a portrait of a rural village struggling to find middle ground between the economic need for change and the passionate desire of its citizens to keep things as they've always been.
The film's strange progression, from a strictly "Sayles-ian" character piece, to something that resembles a "lost in the woods" film, is a little hard to swallow.

The dictionary definition of "limbo" on the poster of John Sayles's film of that name is "a place of arrested possibilities; a condition of uneasiness or apprehension".
Limbo is very much about apprehension and suspension -- which is something more radically unsettling than the traditional suspense you might be expecting.
Simple as it is, Limbo is a film so richly complex that Sayles is almost obliged to pull in his net before it all spins out of control.

Sayles' new film LIMBO presented me with the same initial frustration, and the same determination to find the one piece that would turn the merely intriguing into the truly brilliant.
For half the film, LIMBO sets a tentative romance against a backdrop of civilization trying to claim one of the few remaining frontiers, even as residents who should know better keep searching for a predictability that just isn't there.
John Sayles' films are always comparative pleasures in the bigger picture of filmmaking, with their smart dialogue and attention to human detail.

Limbo begins by introducing us to Joe Gastineau (David Strathairn), a local resident who seems to be carrying a lot of emotional baggage, and Donna DeAngelo (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), a singer who's been jumping from gig to gig, and from boyfriend to boyfriend, for years.
This is precisely why the second half of Limbo doesn't work: its characters (and their creator, John Sayles) are clearly much more intelligent than the mundane plot that eventually takes over the film.
For the first sixty minutes or so, Limbo was on its way to being one of the best films of the year, and even the latter half could have been good in another context.

It is, of course, another kind of limbo, wondering whether the characters will succumb to the ravages of nature or the perfidy of mankind.

The film, which was moving slowly to begin with, comes to a complete halt here; while it attempts suspense by wondering whether it will be friend or foe who finds them, the behavior on the island is monotonous and totally out of sync with the rest of the film.
