Limelight (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Limelight is a 1952 film written, directed by and starring Charles Chaplin, co-starring Claire Bloom, with a guest appearance by Buster Keaton.
The film score is composed by Chaplin and arranged by Ray Rasch.
His own film career began in 1914, and in the story of an aging entertainer looking back over his glorious career Chaplin seems to be facing the fear that he himself may be all washed up.

Portrait of an Artist as an Old man
Limelight was to be his last American film, commenced half a decade after the end of WW2 and ready for première in the fifth year of the Cold War, made by one of its victims, a "peacemonger" and a rebel who instead of taking the guise of the tramp is now an old clown.
Limelight, the most emotional of films, is all about the death of emotions – as such a major theme developed with pathetic consistency in Hollywood films, whether screwball or noir or whatever.
Limelight is a historical film in the sense Chaplin admired when talking about the "poetic interpretation" of Ivan the Terrible (for him "the acme of all historical pictures").

Likewise, Limelight's strengths and faults both arrive in plenty, and both are so genuinely expressive of Chaplin the man — rather than of a studio's standard-issue production committee — that it's a film only Chaplin in all his on-the-sleeve sensitivities could have made.

The film is famous for featuring the only onscreen teaming of Chaplin with the other legendary comic of the silent era, Buster Keaton, and is equally infamous for Chaplin having allegedly cut out most of Keaton's best bits in their sequence together.
I've read that during the filming Keaton was much funnier in their comedy scene together and Chaplin (being director) edited the result in such a way as to throw the spotlight back on himself.
One driving force behind this film before CHaplin's exile from the USA back to EUrope is his hounding by the congressional Un-American activities witch hunting of the time which branded Chaplin as a leftist because of his sympathies with humanity and the poor and his courageous stand against our then fashionable fascist political persecutions.

While in the film Colombine can be viewed as the double of the aging tramp, in the poem she appears as the double of the posited author.
In the case of Limelight, in the framework of the film as a whole, it is Calvero and not Terry (playing Colombine in the ballet) who is strongly identified with Colombine from the ballet.
There are three similar scenes of dying in the film: the first is of Terry dying in her room of attempted suicide; the second is the ballet scene of the dying Colombine; and the third scene is that of Calvero dying backstage at the very end of the picture.

Films themselves were designed to be disposable - prints to be watched at nickelodeons for a week or so, until the arrival of the following week's fare.
The ways in which the advertising campaign's basic aim was accomplished have varied over the years - by era, by fashion, by country, by poster artist and even by film studio - but its purpose has always been the same - to entice audiences into the cinema.
Unsurprisingly, the general rule is that the older the film, the more scarce is its surviving advertising material.
