A LIMERICK county councillor has found himself in the centre of a controversy involving the resignation of one of the country's top educationalists.
Cllr John Gallahue, Ballylanders, was recently appointed chairman of Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) by Minister for Education Seamus Brennan.
Cllr Gallahue is himself a lecturer at LIT and heads the built environment department.

THE internationally-known Scottish university, Heriot-Watt, which awards architecture degrees to students at Limerick Institute of Technology, is terminating its relationship with LIT after controversial changes to the course.
Meanwhile the former head of architecture at LIT told the Limerick Leader this week that students planning to enrol in architecture at the institute would be better off looking elsewhere because the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) no longer recognises the altered Limerick course.
LIT continues to push through a course called Architectural Technology in which no member of the architectural profession has had any hand, act or part," said Nuala Kernan, director of the course for 25 years up to last August.

LIMERICK became the bungee capital of Ireland and England this week thanks to the efforts of a group of students.
The students at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) reckon they have broken the record for the most bungee jumps at the launch of Rag Week 2002.
According to LIT student union president Mike Gleeson, this is a new record for Britain and Ireland.

The Institute had already held an inquiry into the matter where it is alleged that the staff member was locked in a room by a student and was subject to verbal abuse and foul language and that furniture was thrown around the office.
A number of staff in the Institute gave evidence in support of the staff member and the student was found guilty.
The Institute requested him to issue the staff member with a written apology and to undertake anger management counselling, have no direct dealings with the woman and be under constant supervision.
