Most mainline rail stations, such as Killmallock, Knocklong and Oola were closed in the 1970s but the remaining stations at Limerick Junction and Dromkeen could form the basis of a new commuter service to serve south Limerick and west Tipperary.
Cllr Meagher has already raised the matter of a commuter service from Limerick Junction at Limerick County Council and was encouraged with the response and support he received from fellow councillors.
Limerick Junction is open, as is Dromkeen, so the stations are available," said the Oola councillor.

MY friends in Charleville, County Cork, got a bit of a surprise some time ago when they opened their morning paper to read that not only had they a railway junction, but that it had been singled out as one of the riskiest parts of the national rail network.
From what we read, therefore, a person taking a train from Limerick to Dublin is covered by top quality signalling for only five miles of the journey once she/he has changed at Limerick junction.
A few hundred million to bring the rail network into the 20th century (not to mention the 21st) may seem a lot, but I feel sure that we are already losing such a sum in the traffic chaos which now besets every city and town of substance in the country.

Stations served from Limerick Colbert are Castleconnell, Birdhill, Nenagh, Cloughjordan and Roscrea, terminating at Ballybrophy.
The Limerick to Ennis route is the only open section of a railway line extending from Limerick to Sligo, built by the GS&WR.
The route was commenced in 1848 by the Waterford & Limerick Railway and finished in 1854 – one of the oldest routes in Ireland, and the first approved by the British parliament.

The annual loss incurred on the Limerick Junction to Rosslare line is €3.6 million and the loss on the Ballybrophy line is €1.8 million.
The Limerick Junction to Rosslare line would cost between €45 million and €80 million and one must prioritise so from a revenue and capital expenditure stand point, that may not be the answer.
In relation to the Limerick Junction-Rosslare line, it seems most unusual that before we heard these proposals publicly in relation to closure including this and Limerick-Ballybrophy, there was also a suggestion that the Gorey-Rosslare and another line would be closed.

It transpired that a freightliner train, which had left Limerick shortly before we arrived, had suffered a derailment near Limerick Junction (which is 12 miles from Limerick).
The line beyond the junction for Tuam and Claremorris, which comes shortly after Athenry station, was blocked off by sleepers.

REPAIR work on a viaduct along the Waterford to Limerick rail line that collapsed earlier this month causing a freight train to derail won’t begin until the report into accident is published by the Railway Inspector’s Office.
In the meantime, the Waterford to Limerick rail line between Limerick Junction and Waterford remains closed.
Rail passengers travelling from Limerick to Waterford are transferred to buses at Limerick Junction and brought the rest of the journey by bus to Waterford.

 RTE News - CIÉ urged not to close Rosslare-Limerick link
Iarnród Éireann has been urged not to close the Rosslare-Limerick Junction rail line because it is a vital link for the entire South East region.
The National Spatial Strategy refers specifically to the Rosslare to Limerick transport corridor as being of 'particular relevance' and speaks of the importance of facilitating more direct access to the seaports at Waterford and Rosslare.
Frank O'Regan, President of the Chamber of Commerce, said it was vastly preferable to direct heavy freight traffic away from the inadequate road network and onto the under-used rail network, especially at a time when the road-building programme was running behind schedule.
