Lin Yutang 林語堂 (October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976) was a Chinese writer whose original works and translations of classic Chinese texts became very popular in the West.
Lin was born in Fujian province in southeastern China, near Xiamen.
Lin was very active in the popularization of classical Chinese literature in the West, as well as the general Chinese attitude towards life.

After a search on the web I was surprised to discover that a Chinese site has put the whole of The Importance of Living online, the section on tea coming from chapter 9, although personally I prefer to read it with the original typography from the scans in the PDF.
Lin wrote the kind of book that hardly gets written any more, books of whimsical philosophy and delightful observation of life from a background of familiarity with both Chinese and western literature.
Strictly speaking, the second pot is regarded as the best; the first pot being compared to a girl of thirteen, the second compared to a girl of sweet sixteen, and the third regarded as a woman.

I think of Lin as a remarkable man - but like all Chinese of his era - the tearing up of the Chinese partisanship had indeed made him wanting to side with the KMT or Chiang.
Lin was no exception to be one of those open minded writer.
I would like to find out more from forumites of their views of Lin Yutang - be that he was pampered or pompous during his stay in Nanyang -- his demands might have been a bit over burdening the time and moment in Singapore.

I only discovered Dr Lin Yutang's works in 1993; my landlady had a copy of "The Importance of Living" on her bookshelf, and she encouraged me to read it.
Dr Lin was born in Changchow in the Fukien province of China in 1895.
You may be able to find copies of Dr Lin's works at various UK specialist booksellers, alternatively, email me. I often have spare copies of Dr Lins books for sale.

I visited the website by chance and I was so happy to read all the comments about Yutang's books above and got to know not only me, a Chinese girl who loves his books very much, but there are so many people, even foreigners, enjoy them so much like me.
I found this book in 1973 at age 13 after reading a TV guide profile of the show Kung Fu.
Lin did a phenomenal job of explaining the Chinese people and its culture to a Western audience in a very humorous way.
